Forums - Gaming Discussion - The Xbox One beat the PS4 in November, but at what cost? We do the math

MS can give away the X1 for free and wouldn't even feel it. This is nothing.

There is a reason they are green!

If marketshare is everything, then why MS doesn't give away Xbox One at each retailer, all over the world ?

You can't say "it's nothing, MS is rich, software and accessories will cover it up, blah blah blah..."
They cut price because they got beaten all year long by PS4 and HAD to do something about it.

Do you really think MS wanted it that way ? Do you really think they expected, a year ago, to need to lower entry price from 500$ to 329$ with two games in order to manage getting a victory this November ? I don't think so...

MS had to sacrifice XBO price to avoid losing their main market. Not saying it's a bad decision though, just saying it's a relative victory for now. Let's see what happens next in USA and WW.

Becasue they don't have to give it away for free.  Sure I'm sure dropping price wasn't in the plans, but you do what you have to do. As a comsumer I love it.  hoperfully it forces Sony to drop their price.

Agreed, mate. There's only one winner to competition, adn it's the consumer.

63m is a very small price to pay to get there product moving again.

I bet they spent as much on advertising

Surely MS can afford that, but they must thank God for having their main competitor in such a shaky overall financial situation, having to grasp at PS and their other profitable products and activities to keep the boat afloat while other products and divisions still bleed money. Anyhow, should Sony be taken over by or sell its gaming division to a richer, more profitable and thriving company, the game would become a lot tougher for MS, and probably for Ninty too, should the new owner decide to invest enough money and resources on reviving PSV.

The xbox division probably did lose a lot of money on those sales but the production cost for both consoles has decreased. And we don't know how much.

I truly fail to see how the XBox One beat PS4 in November like it says in the title. NPD? Sure, UK? Sure, rest of the freaking World? No. It is incredible the amount of egocentrism that exist in english speaking countries. They are just a part, an important part of the World but nonetheless just a part. Consoles now sell in numerous developing countries also like Brazil and even now China, and Europe is not only the UK. Every single week of November the PS4 beat the XBox One so in total, XBox One didn't beat the PS4. Sure it sold well, and it was a smart move by them because they can get the money back via other services, but let's not think that everything will change from now on. The PS4 has never had a price drop for example.

hey dont bring us brits into this, you can tell who the brits are we spell correctly :)

Anyone calling this a "victory" for MS is being patently disingenuous. MS is a corporation with many divisions, just like Sony. MS' Xbox division is losing money. Sony's mobile devices division is losing money. What did Sony do to mitigate the loss? Scaled back and winded down the losing division, as any corporation would. The math in the article is overly simplistic and overlooks the lost game and incentive profits that came with the discounted holiday bundles (some as low as 329.99), so I would expect the losses to be greater than the ballpark ~63MM. People also seem to be glossing over how this translates into market share, where your cap is calculated by a 5-15X multiple and puts this loss in the 300MM-1B range (probably closer to the mid-point) for the MONTH. I'm a director of one company and CEO of another; if a division head produced those losses, I would have his head. I think we all need to calm down with the who won November bit.

Sony fans, please do not use this as MS is DOOMED fodder. You're probably using Windows to read this.

If it's only $63m it is worth the investment, because if it wasn't for the pricecut, they would have lost more than that I think.

...Let the Sony Domination continue with the PS4...
