Forums - Gaming Discussion - Street Fighter 5 was a necessity, not a win.

Microsoft has Killer Instinct, Nintendo has Super Smash Bros, before now what did Sony have that's popular to the fighting genre fanbase?  If Street Fighter 5 was a multiconsole title between PS4 and Xbox One, the Xbox One would be definitive console for the fighting game genre.  Sony just killed two birds with one stone.  They'll stay a relevant console to fighting game fans while picking up some casual fighting game fans who buy into the newest Street Fighter.

I'm sure Sony were looking for a popular exclusive fighting game to strengthen their lineup after PS Allstars failed to become one but calling it a necessity seems to be reaching a bit.

err no not really,

PS4 will have plenty of other exclusive fighters, although perhaps not on that level, Guilty Gear is already on the list and so far Tekken 7 has only been announced for PS4.

Obvs SF5 is the big daddy of fighters tho. It is a big win.

Tekken is the bigger franchise however it's only currently been announced for arcades.

Hmm, pie.

It's hardly a necessity to have an exclusive fighter. lol

But Street Fighter V doesn't just make the PS4 "relevant" to the FGC. It makes it the most important platform. So, yes, that is rather huge.

Tekken
Soul Caliber
Motal Kombat
Playstation All Stars Battle Royal
BlazBlue

These are just the other fighting games I can think of off the top of my head, I am sure there are more. Sony would have done just fine regardless of what happened with Street Fighter. As I see it, this was no nessecity, it is just another issue with having three platform holders as opposed to a gaming association or consortium. This and the Tomb Raider deal, along with the millions of dollars, and 1000's of hours of wasted development time are a tragic situation I wish could be fix.

Tekken was bigger years back, but Street Fighter is much bigger today. Plus, Tekken is strongly PlayStation-aligned anyway. It may be exclusive. But, if it's not, it will still sell immensely more on the platform based on previous fan alignments.

But but.. Injustice: Gods Among Us..

Oh wait the online is dead :( Wish I kept my PS3 just for that game, and the PC version has worse netcode than the PC version of USFIV

There's only 2 races: White and 'Political Agenda'
2 Genders: Male and 'Political Agenda'
2 Hairstyles for female characters: Long and 'Political Agenda'
2 Sexualities: Straight and 'Political Agenda'

I'll hear none of it (I know you are right as relaunch of SF in the new style was so successful it was a little silly, it accounts for near 20% of all SF sales).

Yet surely then Tekken being more Playstation aligned means Tekken was the franchise Sony needed to go for not SF.

Tekken was only bigger because the casual fighting game fans got burnt out by the constant milking of the franchise.  Street Fighter 4 came along after the series has been pretty much dead for so long, only for Capcom to once again milk the franchise to death.

When Street Fighter 5 releases on PS4, it'll sell worse than the PS3 version of Street Fighter 4.
