Forums - Nintendo Discussion - It's time to talk, once again, about voice acting in Zelda U.

Do you think Zelda U should be fully voice acted?

Yes 233 45.24%

No 282 54.76%

Total:515

I think there should be voice acting and I find it disappointing that so many people are against it. Mario Sunshine must have scared everyone.

No because i like the strange beeps that characters make instead of speaking. That's their voice.

But if they must have voices, then do everything with heavy British accents and Cockney rhyming slang.

And Starfox Adventures. And F-Zero GX.

Nah, there doesn't have to be major plot points in every dungeon, just make them each feel relevant somehow. I feel like Ocarina of Time did this particularly well with the Sheik appearances and little touches every time you complete one, such as the Deku Tree sprout and monsters in Kokiri Forest disappearing, the Gorons returning to their city or Lake Hylia's water coming back (though they really should have made the ice melt in Zora's Domain).

I also don't want huge moments where it's just like "BOOM here's 7 dungeons, go complete them". I like the segmentation idea, but it would be nice to never have more than 4 dungeons at once.

I'm actually hoping every dungeon but the last is explorable from the get go. I'm sure that if they do that, they'll find some way to keep the plot huge in that game. I just don't want to wait an hour before really playing the game first. In a perfect world, the game will start with the typical Zelda prologue (this time actually narrated), then the screen fades to you standing next to Epona, with your sword, shield, and arrows. On your left, in the distance you can barely see a village, and on your right, you can barely make out what could be a dungeon. No explanation and no more exposition just yet. Just go. You find out what's going on for yourself.

Well, it is a pretty big deal cause The Legend of Zelda has more than just one Iconic character... It has tons and giving all of them voices is a slipperly slope one way or the other and if done wrongly, like giving Zelda a terrible voice, it really would piss off a lot of the fanbase. I really do think this is a big deal considering how terrible Other M was and Cdi or Zelda Cartoon was. Sure, neither of those were really Nintendo but the risk is bigger than you think imo. Heck, if you gave every character in SS a voice which is including Fi, good luck with that annoying shit

As for Other M, that's the writers fault.  Could have had nothing but massive, big name actors doing their best performances in their lives and the terrible script would have been just as terrible.  Take away the voices, Other M's story is still insultingly bad.  And the Cdi games were bad, again, because they were bad.  Remove the voice files and you still got yourself a bad game.  As for SS, I said it wouldn't change anything and would improve many cutscenes.  If Fi is annoying without a voice though, she will probably still be annoying with one.  And "tool tip" like pop-ups from characters can be left unvoiced; those are kinda OOC anyway.

And Nintendo franchises have been voice acted before with good results.  Fire Emblem Awakening, Xenoblade, Metroid Prime 3.  So citing the bad ones as a reason not to do it is kinda pointless since you can cite good reasons too do it.

Well, the issue is, when the script is bad, adding voices arguably makes them worse. And if Other M was designed without a voice, then maybe the cutscenes as well as other things wouldn't have happened either cause instead of building the entire game to revolve around cutscenes and VA, it would revolve around things that people care about. And its not like Zelda doesn't have its fair share of cheesy scripts, its just most would just skip or not care enough to give any thoughts about how cheesy it really is but giving VA to those might make them worse since they will be far more noticable and cheesy

And also, the fact that you can list a # of bad ones is the issue that most fans have when it comes to Zelda having VA. We are well aware that there are Nintendo franchises that have good VA but Nintendo's record on VA has not been consistent enough to make us confident imo

Without a doubt, yes. It would help to make up for the series' archaic and poor storytelling.

Zelda isn't even in the same genre as TLOU. And Zelda games don't really have amazing stories compared to other AAA games or even smaller games. Hell Phoenix Wright and Paper Mario have better stories than Zelda and they don't have voice acting.

None if those games are presented the way Zelda is, though, and Paper Mario, a game about paper, gets a pass on text. Zelda isn't made to look like a children's pop up book. It doesn't. I'd argue that Pheonix Wright should have it, but I can see why the tech it's on could prohibit that. Genre doesn't matter.

Seriously I don't know why we talk about this every few months.

The problem is such an easy fix.

We can debate all we like, at the end of the day though we all know Nintendo isn't going to put in voice acting for a Zelda game.

Well, that wasn't really to address the OP's thing but it was targeted towards the person I was replying too. But fine, I will say something about that "good voice acting" thing too cause imo, "good voice acting" is highly subjective from person to person and this will be specially true when it comes to LoZ. Like, if you look at when an anime gets dubbed, some people will say, well, this is a pretty good dub while others will say that its terrible, same principle here imo.

And the other thing is that, Zelda's Music has always been great which is why most gamers are very confident when it comes to Music and Zelda games but in terms of Nintendo games, Voice has always been an up and down sorta deal. That and also the script can sometimes ruin the VA as well and Zelda certainly has its fair share of cheesy moments and putting voices on them might make them worse. Sure, maybe the planets will align and VA in Zelda might be the best thing to happen since Condomless sex but its such a big risk, specially for Zelda

Just because it's a risk doesn't mean it's an unnessecary risk. Zelda needs to start incorperating VA. Fear that they'll do a poor job, is only a reason for them to make sure they don't do a poor job.

Again, everything is subjective, but that doesn't mean that voice acting isn't necessary. If some people liked Wind Wakers music, and some people hated it, no one would say that Wind Waker shouldn't have had music. They'd say that Waker Waker should have had better music. If some people don't like the voice acting done in Zelda U, the appropriate response is that Nintendo should have done a better job on the voice acting, not that they should have not added voice acting at all. That's not a valid responce. Same with anime dubs. If some people don't like a dub, then you criticize the dub quality, not its existance.

And I don't believe that good voice acting is highly subjective. Mediocre voice acting, maybe, but not good voice acting. It's unanimous that the Last of Us have great voice acting. It's unanimous that GTA V had great voice acting. Same with Cowboy Bebop or most Studio Ghibli films. A minority will always be there to criticize anything good, but if it's done well, most will apreciate it.
