Forums - General Discussion - Extraterrestrial Life?

I was recently having an argument with someone, about proof of life outside of earth. I was making a point that there has never been any discovery of life in outerspace, which did not originate (got brought up) from Earth.

he then claimed that they recently discover a bacteria on Mars. I said, I think i know what you are talking about, but i dont think it was a bacteria, and im pretty sure it was concluded, that it was brought on mars from the rover.

Later that day, i went to research if my claims were true or not. but i havent really got any answers. From just googling, i cant find any story about life being found in outerspace, seemingly confirming my claim. but i also cant find any account of life ever being found on Mars, whether from a contaminated rover or not.

can anybody give me any insight on this topic.

did we both make up the story that life was found on mars?

Er, what exactly did you google then?

"rover finds life on mars"

"rover does not find life on mars"

"rover finds life"

etc

Try being more generic. I googled "bacteria mars" and got stuff like http://scienceline.ucsb.edu/getkey.php?key=2986 . Overall it seems there's no silver bullet discovered yet, but the general consensus is that there was something from Mars that may have been bacteria. Also, it's unclear whether the rover brought bacteria with it, but it is commonly believed several hundred species survived the decontamination procedures, so the answer is "probably."

i just thought i reme, bered hearing a story about scientists thinking they discovered life on mars (whether it be bacteria or something else) only to then retract their claim, because it came from the rover.

and obviously the guy i was arguing with also thought they had recently discovered somesort of life.

it seems we both made up the story

but i really couldnt find anything, other than them making discoveries about mars being potentially able to support life

it seems though, just as i thought, there has never been extraterrestrial life discovered.

I watched some show explaining that someone accidentally sneezed on a space shuttle as it was being built and it went into space then came back to earth. That's when they discovered the stuff on it. They discovered the microbes survived re-entry and everything space could throw at it but also mutated into a more deadly strain. I can't remember what the show was called or much about it. I tried to found something about it and but couldn't. I did find some relevant info about your question though.

The fact that we haven't found anything in our solar system is a pretty weak argument against aliens.

My stance is that there is a good chance that there are aliens out there, possibly even some that have developed space travel. But they certainly never visited our solar system. That would be a bit too much coincidence for me.
