Forums - Gaming Discussion - Are you ready for a change in cell phones?

i'm pretty bored with smartphones these days. too much for what they offer. i'm thinking of going back to the flip phone days because smartphones are getting to be next to useless to me now that the novelty of being able to answer trivia on the go has long worn off.

I agree that we need some battery innovation. Not just larger batteries, but new technology for batteries that enable faster charging, more capacity, decreased (or no) battery decay, etc.

Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.

Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash

As long as Smartphones don't have anything actually smart about them I don't use them. My Cellphone is 12 years old and still running like on it's first day. Since I only need a phone for, well, telephone someone or send anyone a text message that's also all I need

twin screens and wireless charging are good enough for me

Switch!!!

I just want one that works and has a decent battery. For all my "fancy" Samsung smart phone does the crashing and inability to basic things often with a three hour battery life (in use) or 9 hour (not in use) makes it as much a hassle as a valued asset for my work.

Cell phones has been something that's been changing constantly, but lately it seems were at a halt. with the introduction of the touch screen roughly 10 years ago, or from the introduction of the iphone 1 that popularized the touchscreen in 2007, we've been using pretty much the same phone. Everytime a new phone comes out nown all that's bragged about is: CPU, GPU, RAM, screen and now 64 bit.

Really no ones going to care about the CPU or whats running the phone as long as everythings seamlesss, I couldn't care less about what CPU is in my Galaxy SII then my Galaxy SV, same goes for GPU, were not going to be playing games at Uncharted levels nor do we want to. RAM has been hovering around 1GB to 4 GB for the longest time, which again isn't really something to be impressive about, it's just part of what makes the phone respond seamless, which is a given with cellphones now and days. Now 64 bit has been talked about but really, who cares, it's a big step now that we don't have to halt cellphone technology at 3GB, but were still a couple years away until were actually going to need more the 3GB anyway.

Other minor things like memory which most phones now are 32GB minimum anyway which imo is plenty of memory for regular user. The camera is also minor in my opinion, if people want to take incredibly amazing photos, they probably already got a really nice camera. As long as it takes decent pictures and videos I'm happy.

So that covered the main aspects of the modern day cellphone, iphones and the galaxys have not really offered much out of there phones for many years other then waterproofing which is nice. The main thing I think they should focus their time and efforts on are in the batteries, most phones are lucky to get a full days charge from regular use, even the phone I have now (Galaxy S5) which is only 6 months old, if I barely use it it'll be great, will only be down to 70% by the end of the day, but if I use it a lot it's practically dead by midnight.

Something needs to change with cellphones, I'm ready for the next step.

Actually the new phones coming out with the Snapdragon 810 early next year should match the PS3 in power.  Uncharted graphics could very well be coming, albeit last gen Uncharted of course.

Prediction for console Lifetime sales:

Wii:100-120 million, PS3:80-110 million, 360:70-100 million

[Prediction Made 11/5/2009]

3DS: 65m, PSV: 22m, Wii U: 18-22m, PS4: 80-120m, X1: 35-55m

I gauruntee the PS5 comes out after only 5-6 years after the launch of the PS4.

But does it really matter?  The majority play simple freemium games. If your going to buy amazing looking games that's what a PSVita or 3DS is for, if anything this means Sony or Nintendo will be able to have a graphically better handheld.

Oh it does matter.  Bioshock was just ported to the iPhone and BF4 may come along as well.  With a Dualshock 4 you can play GTA and dozens of other great AAA quality games.

By no means am I saying that Phones will eliminate or EVER catch up to the performance of a modern console; but they are close to almost completily pushing gaming handhelds out of the market, and they are making consoles less of a neccessity.  If you are the type of guy that just plays AAA games once a week or so, you may not need a console to get your fix within a few years from now.

Now admitedly phones are about to hit the same technology walls that Desktops hit 2 years ago, but still I think very soon we can expect flagship phones to always be perpetually in-between last and current gen consoles.  Once that happens I guaruntee COD and some of the other major franchises will begin releasing their games on mobile if enough of a market develops for them to.

I went from a Galaxy S3 to a Note4 recently. Pretty similar phone for sure, but the battery life on the Note4 is AMAZING. I can go pretty much 2 entire days of use with no recharge. But seriously most noticeable thing for me was changing providers. I am not sure if it is just where I live but I had Sprint with the S3 (and several older phones) and there service was simply terrible. I switched to Verizon and it is night and day. No waiting on anything, completely full data and phone service everywhere even places you wouldn't expect to be able to make calls. That being said the service does cost a pretty good deal more than Sprint for the same options.

?EDIT- Also I ordered the Note4 off a website without ever handling it based on the listed specs for it.  Had I known it was so huge I would have chosen something else.  It is almost impossible to use 1 handed and it falls out of hip pockets and gets in the way of anything involving movement.  You pretty much need to wear cargo pockets to carry it around.  But performance wise it is def good.

Have the same $10 cell phone I got in 2011. It just makes calls and beat up to hell. With that said. Nope. I have a tablet for all that app crap and it bores me so my tablet is dusty. I make phone calls. All I need all I care about.
