Well, this is a bit crazy. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is supposed to be a huge game and weighs in over 40GB on the PS4 and Xbox One. The PC version is supposed to be even larger in size due to the ability of choosing better textures and resolutions. The PC version of the game sold at retail stores will be on 6 DVDs.

The PS4 and Xbox One versions come on a single dual layered Blu-ray disc, which is able to hold up to 50GB of data. Even though modern PCs come with the latest hardware, the adoption rate of Blu-ray drives is still very low. So most if not all developers who release physical version of their games are forced to release them on DVDs. Since the game is so huge I expect the DVDs to be dual layered as well which carry around 8.7GB of data, so 6 discs make that around 52GB of data which sounds about right.

The physical copy also comes with a download code and does not require the discs to be inserted to play them like the console versions. So buying physical copies is understandable for those who have slow connections or limited bandwidth. Anyway I thought this was interesting, good luck to the guys getting the physical copies, installing 6 discs is gonna be a pain.

I bet these pc publishers will now use this as an excuse to kill retail completly. If they wanted they could simple release the games on blue ray as well and tell the people to get blue ray drives, this is what publishers like konami did with games like mgs 2 or sh3 on pc. And now every game comes in a dvd, why is it that pc gaming isnt adopting blue ray?

DVDs? Why not Blu-Ray?

I don't see the issue of them including a digital copy. I mean the game is going to have to be tied to a digital service for DRM anyway. As for the multiple discs, well I am not sure they really have a choice Blu-ray marketshare on PCs is still nonexistant. And the same thing happened during the transition to DVDs

Cause not enough PCs have bluray loll. They mostly use either DVD or just go straight to USB/Digital Download

This is definitely not new, my copy of Star Wars Battlefront II a late 2005 game no less, is on 5 CDs. I still think we're quite a long way before Blu-ray becomes a standard on PC.

I don't think it will. You're more likely to see a PC without a disc drive than with a BRD

Yeah maybe, theres quite a few laptops now without disc drives, but I think they might linger around on desktops.

Last time I've checked, most people (at least around me) making new builds don't even put DVD drives into their rigs, let alone BluRay.

Windows 95 came in multiple configurations of disks totaling 20 or more. I can't remember the totals for the different revisions or 3.5" and 5.25" but it was crazy.

I don't think people as a whole get to worked up about it. It's nothing new.
