The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Delayed to May; CD Projekt Sends an Open Letter to Explain

Today CD Projekt RED announced that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will be delayed to May 19th on all platforms.

To explain the change, CD Projekt sent an “open letter,” which you can read below in its entirety.

Dear Gamers,

Ever since we started working on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, we knew it would be an ambitious game. We wanted, and still aim, to give you an incredible experience, an epic adventure in a vast, completely open fantasy universe.

The sheer size and complexity of The Witcher, key features of the title, have had a decisive impact on production. Now, nearing the end of our work, we see many details that need to be corrected. When we release the most important game in our studio’s history, we must be absolutely sure that we did everything we could to limit any bugs to a level that will allow you to enjoy the game thoroughly.

With this in mind, we took another look at current workloads and what they mean for the team. Even though everyone is working at full speed, we concluded that we need another 12 weeks, so we are shifting the release date of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt to May 19th, 2015.

We owe you an apology. We set the release date too hastily. It’s a hard lesson, one to take to heart for the future. We know what we want to do to make Wild Hunt one of the best RPGs you will ever play. And we continue to work hard to achieve just that. So, we apologize and ask for your trust.

Thank you for the all support you show us on a daily basis. We truly do appreciate it. It has fueled us in our passion since the start and will continue to do so.

As the old adage attributed to Shigeru Miyamoto says, “A delayed game is eventually good, a bad game is bad forever.”

Personally, what I’ve seen so far of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt makes me believe that it’ll be worth the wait.

Ughhh, this waiting is killing me already!

Already saw this in the xbox fan thread. Anyways, I am glad they are taking more time to put out the best quality they can get.

Wow.... thats lame I was really looking forward to playing it sooner :( At least they are taking their time to make the game good though

They are anti Ubisoft.

The Order 1886 will sell well. Great. February will have Evolve and The Order 1886.

Really sad that Ubisoft came and destroyed Miyamoto teachings with Watch Dogs.

Better to be a bit late, than to be AC Unity.

More time for The Order, very happy about that. And May was completely empty until now.

Sounds good to me. If they need an extra few months they may as well take them.

Thankfully, next year is packed anyway so there are plenty of other games to play

Disappointing but I am glad that they are financially secure enough to delay the game until it's ready. Both The Witcher 1 & 2 were rushed out the door and were pretty damn rough at launch. Making a game that rivals GTA V and Assassin's Creed unity in scale, detail and scope with a team a quarter the size must be hard.
