Forums - Sony Discussion - Phil Harrison doesn't believe Playstation 3 is the future of the industry?

I'm sure a lot of people were surprised when Phil Harrison praised Nintendo at GDC 2008 and basically bashed Sony Japan for simply not getting it and understanding the future of gaming.  Well listening to the comments that have now been made at his first speech as president of Infogrames on why he left Sony it appears that the things that once excited him about the Playstation brand may now be gone.

Here are some of the comments he made on why he left Sony: "the things that excited me the most, the things that turned me on as a gamer, and as a business person, and as a creative person were the future of our industry, the connected community experiences - all the things we're starting to see emerge that are really exciting players around the world."*.  If those are the reasons he's giving for leaving what does that say about Sony?  Especially coming from somewho who was in the position to know just what Sony's future plans are.

Later on he says: "And those are the things I started thinking about in terms of creating a company or getting involved with a company to really shape and direct a business towards that future."*.  Does that mean he didn't think he would be able to direct the Playstation brand to a future that excited him as a gamer, as a creative person?  Statements like these should be alarming to the most dedicated Sony fanboy and hopefully they'll be a wakeup call to the people at Sony Japan that still haven't gotten it.

What so SONY Japan didn't go the wii way with just casual games taking priority OVER hardcore games = Him leaving

I am GLAD he left then...

I am very happy with my wii for that part of gaming, but I LOVE the Ps3 lineup as it is

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

That probably could be maybe why, but I use caution when saying that.lol

Seriously, there are so many reasons why he could have left, and we may never know.

Guitar Hero 3/ Smash Hits

But he is speaking the truth. Casual games on the ps2 were/are huge in Europe. SCEJ did nothing to promote those games in Japan, while Nintendo has proven there is a huge fanbase for these casual games in Japan.

So, should SCEJ now start promoting games like Eyetoy, Singstar and Buzz in Japan for the PS3? It might have a good effect!

i wish it would but we both know that they already are viewing him as not that important....he left the mother ship and no longer has any creditability to their clan

He could have just left because a new high level employee has an odour problem.

Or he could have been pressured to leave

Or he could have been offered a bigger wage by Atari/Infogrames

Or, much more likely, he was pissed with Sony, so he left.

@mesoteto

not only that but most SONY fanboys vision = Killzone 2, MGS4, Res 2, FF13

n Phil Harrison is indirectly saying SONY should not go in that direction, so go figure...

He left Sony to work where?

Considering Harrisons sayings from a longer period, i'd say that Harrison was pissed because his opinions weren't taken into account/he was constantly overrun by some superior. And those comments just back my view. In other words, he didn't have the power anymore to guide it in the direction he wanted. Or maybe he just wanted Kutaragis position, which was given to Hirai.

If you want to think this as a sign of Sonys future way, considering that apparently Harrison didn't like the PS3 in the first place, PS4 would be going in the more power, more multimedia, more everything except gaming -way.

Rats usually leave the sinking ship, but i wouldn't consider this situation being it. Atleast not yet.

Ei Kiinasti.

Eikä Japanisti.

Vaan pannaan jalalla koreasti.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

Phil Harrison obviously has wet dreams about the Wii but I prefer the direction Sony and 360 are going. The Wii is a great innovative machine but its not my style. I'll stick with my Ps3.
