OK thanks, seems like the consensus is that 500 is the max I should really be paying for this used machine though.  I am hoping that alienware holds its resale value a little bette if we ever go to sell it when he moves on to the next.

gaming computers really don't hold resale value regardless of brand. At least with a second hand one though you lose less but really old gaming rigs are not exactly desirable items regardless of how snazzy they look.

Understood.  Well, I offered him 400 and he said anything less than 650 and he would just keep it.  I told him good luck.  Thanks anyways though!

Used? I wouldn't pay over $500 for it. The CPU isn't overclockable, and the 760 is mid-range at best. i7 sounds fancy, but means nothing for gaming and since it isn't a K model, you cannot OC, which limits the system and the value. Also, the power supply is downright pitiful, 330W isn't going to get you far if you decide to upgrade.

Edit: Yup, a similar computer (brand new) is only $585. The one I linked is also overclockable. An extra $200 and you could even get a 970, one of the most powerful cards on the market currently. If you pay any more than $500, you are being ripped off big time. There is absolutely nothing "high end" about this PC. I personally would only buy it if it came down to $400 or less.

OK, thanks for the feedback.  To be fair he does have 1 year of the extended warranty left.

Will the 760 be able to handle most games on mid to high settings?

Extended warranty is not even close to the $300 extra he wants from you. Not to mention that it's just 1 more year of warranty, something you would find with almost any new system that you build.

The 760 will be able to handle most modern games on medium to high. Won't be that way for long though, 2-3 years from now you'll be changing the resolution or playing games mostly on medium, with a few low settings. Fast forward then, when you decide it might be time to upgrade the GPU, you'll realize that the PSU is too pitiful to handle most GPUs.

My advice? Pass on this. Build your own (Very easy, just look up some tutorials. Not much different from building with legos in terms of difficulty), or look for a better deal. You're getting ripped off here.

Edit: Just noticed that you said no. Good. If you decide to build your own, PM me and I'll guide you through the process for picking parts and such.

Xbox One - PS4 - Wii U - PC

Used it is worth $450 maximum with no aesthetic damage and full software install discs.

...you are missing a motherboard and operating system. Those alone will run you about $150 more than the build you just linked (for a total of $735).

Edit: And a cd-drive, so increase that to $750. Add 7% sales tax, and you are at $800.

Money can't buy happiness. Just video games, which make me happy.

The 760 is not "Mid-range at best" lol.  It's still a bairly high-end card, and should max out a decent portion of even the newest games.

I wouldn't hope to much about how well be value alienware.  It is Dell after all...

Prediction for console Lifetime sales:

Honest to god the seller may get more money selling each part individually.

$500+ is ok since it's bundled with Windows 8 + the alienware brand and fancy case
the 760 is a low-mid range GPU.. good enough for Med-High settings with Low AA and AF @ 1080p

as for the powersupply it's kinda low.. but i think it's ok.. since i don't think alienware is dumb enough
to put a PSU that can't candle the systems load it's bundled with ,

The power supply is pretty terrible, but you can definitely build a better desktop for cheaper. If you're not into building pcs then i would say go for it.

Lets not pretend like you would actually need a cd drive in 2014. Also, who pays for operating systems?

Wow guys, what's up with the hate against the GTX 760? It can easily handle everything I throw at it at max settings, and I bought it a year ago.

Sure, maybe it won't be that way in 3 years, but come on.
