Forums - Politics Discussion - Should High School students be required to pass a citizenship test to graduate?

This country needs to focus on getting good teachers and properly funding the school system before we add anymore test for these kids. My daughter is literally having to share books because the school cant afford anymore. I thought it was cause her school isn't in the best part of town but then my cousin who lives in one of the richest areas around has been dealing with the same thing. They literally make photocopies of the book for the kids to take home. So they can afford to waste all that paper but just buying the book is to much.

funding schools is a waste of money. thas the conclusion i have come to after doing interviews with students for a sociology class i had (college). you would be amazed how much of these people are blithering idiots who cannot form a coherent setence,  thought, or idea. funding the school isnt going to make a difference in any of that. if youre talking pre-college,  then yes, maybe those schools should b funded enough to at least not force students to share books, but ill tell you that real learning occurs when you want it to. we have so many resources at our disposal,  and we cant blame the fact that we have dumb students because of low funding in schools. thats just shifting responsobility.

i say give these students the test whether they learn it in school or not. they can learn it on their own. im telling you, in the real world, youre going to have to look shit up yourself. all the time. we wilk be doing these highschool students a service to not be so fucking reliant on teachers and "funding for schools".

Speaking as a teacher, they really need to figure out a way to filter some kids into vocational schools/training if they arent going to even try to do academic work.  Nothing is more annoying to me than to have a student that has to come to class because he/she has sluffed too much, but refuses to do any work.  Whats the point of making them go if they dont do anything!  Whats even worse is I have a couple of those types of students on iep's, which means i have to accomdate them by giving them easier work and they still dont do it!

give the kids who dont want to learn some vocational training so they can accomplish something and so that we can actually focus on the students that want to learn!

Yeah, sure. Whe really want governement deciding who have the right to be a citizen and opening more opportunities to brainwash, manipulation and etc.

i dont understand why you are hating on minimum wage. 10$ isnt so much. we have 8,50€ minimum wage in germany and its fine(well before the state payed the rent for most of the people who now get minimum wage)
okay, living in germany is cheaper i guess(i need 20€ for food if i dont eat outside and pay 240€ rent a month for a nice room inside the city) but that just mean the 8,50€ buy more than 10$.

do you want people with bad education to starve? or to work 2 fulltime jobs?

I had the same education. Private school wasted my time with worthless religious classes, then in the middle of my junior year I decided to leave the private school for public school. Still after having to take extra classes to graduate I made it. Then went to community college, but had a kid and had to leave. But did I give up and just become a life long minimum wage worker? no. I joined the military. When the deployments got too much and I left and once again was out of work with three worthless degrees and no experience did i give up and expect the world to hand me what I wantec on a silver plate? no. I worked hard at my minimum wage job to better myself. Never expected anything more for a job a monkey could do. Just pushed myself and became a store night manager in just under 1.5 years. Americans and their couch culture want something for nothing.

Why should I be for us being paid to have no ambition? Huh?

The reest of thd world is walking all over us and besting us at everyfhing, but the Summer olympics. yippee!

its 10 freaking dollar, and they are doin something for their payment, they strike...   do you realy think threating the poor and uneducated like crap and let em work the whole day makes anything better? and its good for the economy AND the consumer, because they have to compete on other things and not on wages.

speaking as somebody who has been going to school for 20 years, i completely agree with you! of course, i believe students should have the choice, but by the time you are just about to graduate, you should have an idea if you are going to continue education or just want to make a modest living learning some kind of trade.

we need to make high schools more rigorous. and if students cant keep up, or are in danger of failing, maybe we can offer those students a different route.

my post you were responding to was written as a way to vent about this idea that schools need more funding. and i am just a firm believer in that no amount of funding is going to alter a students ability or drive. and really, we need to ween kids off of using teachers or the classroom as their only source of knowledge and encourage them to take some of the responsibility of learning on themselves. because if youre going to get an education, thats the kind of shit youre going to be expected to do. lets stop shifting the responsibility on teachers and the government for how kids are performing in school and lets focus more of the attention on the students themselves. thats my opinion right now, and it could change as i experience more things, but it seems pretty sound to me.

Agreed, and honestly there wouldnt even be funding issues if we eliminated all the wasteful hand holding for students who dont even want to be there...

I am actually not against the fact that it is 10 dollars an hour. I think some states may actually be at that mark or passed it anyways. I am against minimum wage workers thinking they deserve it. They are poor and have to work such hard jobs just to make ends meat. Did America make them get girls pregnant or make girls get pregnant. Or make them not study hard or go to college or learn a trade if they are not good at school, or join the military, or get on disability if all of that is impossible for them? No.

I expect people to work hard and do their best. Same thing I tell my employees. Do your best, don't argue or give me attitude or complain. But Americans just want to do all of that. The successful ones do not.

I just lost an employee. Know why? She went to school to become a nurse and is now making whatever it is Nurses make. She left Walmart where she was making 11 something an hour after 3 years. Good job!

She worked hard while at Walmart and recieved decent raises yearly. in fact, if you want to stay with the company regular associates can push as much as 18 dollars an hour over a 15 year span! But that means they need to stay with the company and do well every day that they work. They get over a month of vacation, sick days, 401k, stock purchase option and match, 401 k match, great health and dental, life insurance, accident insurance, etc!

I am sorry that some wish to go from job to job their whole life because they are either on drugs, have an attitude problem or lack an eternal sensor and always get in trouble. Or any other excuse or reason. But that is their problem. Empoyers want workers! They do not want to have to fire anyone or have a crappy worker who just wants to punch the clock. If you do good by them, they usually will do good by you.

But nothing should just automatically be expected just because you are struggling to make ends meat. If two jobs is what it takes, then two jobs it is. Sorry.

everyone who is working fulltime deserves to make ends meat.  why should you work at all if you cant life from it?

The culture that everybody is a winner make us all weiners.

I didn't want to study? Fuck that, I want a good payment because I'm also special.

You want to give kids a new test to graduate? Make them learn how to do taxes or balance a checkbook.
