Forums - Politics Discussion - Obama calls for police to wear body cameras as part of $263m reform package

I'm sure they'll spend an arm and a leg on each camera instead of just strapping an inexpensive GoPro to themselves, because that's what guvment does best -- waste money

While I agree with Cops having cameras, I dont think it should be a federal law or regulation. States and counties should make that call

nailed. everyone else is missing this key point. it doesnt matter, if it is a good law, or not. The feds shouldnt (arent) be able to make such law, its a local decision.

It has to be done at the federal level. what state or local politician is going to want to make enemies of there police force? The lack of spine at the state and local level is the reason Police forces are so screwed up now.

Oh, and they are certainly able to make such a law.

Well its already being done at the local level. So you're wrong on that point.

what he means is if its not done a federal level, it is entirely pointless or nearly pointless. And considering the budget for police militarization, there isn't a finacial excuse to not do it either.

thats not what he said. he said it has to be done on a federal level because local politicians wouldn't want to upset the police force. he was wrong. There isn't really a budget for police militarization, which I strongly disaprov eof, and which cameras would probably slow down. What has happened is they simply get military surplus gear that they should not need. Whats more worisome is the increasing number of federal armed agencies. I dont know why so many federal agencies need armed units instead of cordinatiing with local police forces.

this is still going to get abused. Oh sorry, forgot to charge my cam today sarge, oh my cam fell off right before he rushed at me and i drew my gun and shot him, oh i thought my cam was on, apparently it wasn't, oh my cam was stolen, and the hundreds of other oh sorry sarge my cam ... stories

Read a story about this  guy who was days away from going to jail for like 15 years over some altercation with the police I forget what exactly happened. A repoter at the last minute was able to find the dash cam that mysteriously dissppeared of course and save the guys life basically.

On the other hand apparently they did this in Cali and the stats were amazing. Complaints and something else went down by like over 50% google it. So I am hopeful about this. It wont solve all the problems of course but it will make it harder. Espicially if like five cops are around its hard for all of them to say "oh are cams were broken"
