Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Rise of the Tomb Raider - timed exclusive actually a big deal.

Microsoft is trying to have Rise of Tomb Raider go up against Uncharted 4 with this timed exclusive deal.

I previously had not played the new Tomb Raider game and felt that no Tomb Raider could ever compare to Uncharted. But fast forward this weekend where I played over 20hours and finished Tomb Raider Difinitive Edition. The game is freakin amazing. I hope that the money received from the timed exclusive really helps development of Rise of Tomb Raider and they improve an already great formula.

Rise of The Tomb Raider may not be as epic as Uncharted 4 but Crystal Dynamic does have a franchise that will at least rival Naughty dogs and especially for Xbox One owners they have a title thats comparable to Uncharted 4 next Holiday. Microsoft deal for a timed exclusive now peg PS4's Uncharted 4 vs Xbox One's Rise of the Tomb Raider during Holiday 2015. The deal might only be timed exclusive but as far as Holiday 2015 Rise of the Tomb Raider will be compared to Uncharted 4.

It's a win/win deal for both console owner.... PS4 get a great game after they finished playing Uncharted 4 and Xbox One owners get an improved version of Tomb Raider (extra $$$ for development) that can compare to the PS4's Uncharted during Holiday 2015.

Gamers are a fickle bunch...

They will lose sales from PS4 no doubt. Just look at Plant's Vs Zombies garden warfare... by the time the PS4 version came out the XBO version had already been heavily discounted... meaning that people were less likely to invest full price. They were probably less likely because once a game has launched you lose a bunch of people who might have been interested in it. Launch day hype is very important in game sales, if the game has already been on the shelf for a while, a new other platform release will garner even less interest (just watch out for how bad Watch Dogs Wii-u does - even if Wii-u sales are not particularly good but you will see what I mean)

So for me, CD might get some upfront cash, but they shouldnt hold out the hope that the PS4 version when it comes will sell any substantial numbers. Personally with Sony's insistance on releasing games early in the year, its most likely going to be up against (when it releases on PS4) a PS4 exclusive or two... which will also dent its sales. For me its Lose Lose for CD.

But you never mention what it will do for CD on Xbox one..... being a timed exclusive should increase the sales of that game on the Xbox One. Will take the pressure of having to out perform Uncharted 4. Sure the PS4 will suffer but boost the Xbox one sales and Microsoft paid part of CD Development costs.

The only win would be getting a working and complete version half a year later, instead of the usual broken day 1 version.

I'm not in a hurry anyway. The reboot wasn't bad, wasn't tombraider either. The shooting got repetitive and the puzzles were too few, too easy and too far in between. It just turned into the usual collectathon. I hope Uncharted sticks to its roots and doesn't go with this hyrbid, bit of everything, master of none, model.

So being a cross gen game kills all your hype and nullifys the games potential?

I guess none of you got hyped for dragon age, shadow of mordor or far cry either but are absolutely blown away by AC unity, lords of the fallen and driveclub?

I was definitely blown away by Lords of the Fallen. One of the best games of the year.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

Its only a big deal because Microsoft moneyhatted Tomb Raider away from their traditional fanbase on playstation. Chances are they are big fans of Uncharted, wont want to to be duped into buying an Xbone for Tomb Raider when they know its not an Xbox game and just want to enjoy it. MS is smart, but evil.

No PS fans is used to wait the game from time exclusive (remember Xbox 360 era),  then PS4 will get the best version and play another games far better on PS4while waiting. Microsoft can spend the money while PS4 will get first party, better multyplatform games and 3rd party exclusive as well.  It's a futile movement from Microsoft. That's why Microsoft is stil not learning.

Of course, its a big deal. Lara will be on top of Nate when the two goes head to head! ;)

Tomb Raider did some things better than Uncharted, but over all I prefer the each of the 3 previous PS3 Uncharteds to the TR reboot.

The conspiracy theorist in me thinks that CD/SE were looking at a Q1 2016 launch for a multiplat RTR, so as not to go up against Uncharted on PS4 for holiday 2015 and dilute their sales on the main TR platform. MS came along and offered a financial incentive to speed up development for the Xbox versions and release it holiday 2015 as a timed exclusive.

I just hope the sped up development timeline doesn't mean they put out a lesser product.

Judging by the fuss kicked up by ps fans, it's a big deal.

But I'll have to correct you on one bit. The deal didn't get the game onto x1, it was already coming so it's not really a plus for x1 fans. The deal stopped it from coming to the ps. So ms paid for bragging rights for 6 months*.

*Educated guess.... Kinda!

I try to look at the situation objectively but it's still a scummy move at the end of the day. This isn't like Bayonetta 2 where the game wouldn't have existed without Nintendo. This was a sequel to a very popular game that was going to every console (aside from WiiU) until Microsoft opened their wallet. They did nothing besides take away a game from another fanbase.

Oh whatever, PS4 fans will get Uncharted 4 in holiday 2015, then they can buy Tomb Raider a few months later when the timed exclusivity runs out I guess.

So because you liked the game makes it a big deal? Its still not.

No sales are what make it a big deal, TR aint no slouch.

Actually it is a slouch. Tomb Raider sales are pretty low. Square Enix even said so themselves.

See and this is why nobody hear has to listen to you -__-

Ive mentioned it once here and I will mention it again

http://au.ign.com/articles/2014/03/07/tomb-raider-closing-in-on-six-million-copies

Square enix announced that the sales were disappointing. It wasn't until the release of the updated version on the next gen consoles that sales really took off. Now given that do you honestly think its going to have even decent sales if it is only on the X1. Hopefully MS paid them enough to make up for all the lost sales. Lol
