Forums - Nintendo Discussion - 3DS Is Really Fading Out Fast In The US

From the NPD thread, thought it deserved its own thread, numbers are courtesy of a poster at NeoGaf, formatting of this table is a little janky, but it should work:

This is the 3DS vs. the PSP and DS at the same respective points in their life cycle.

        3DS 2014  PSP 2008  NDS 2008

January       97       230       251

February     153       243       587

March        159       297       698

April        106       193       415

May           97       182       452

June         152       337       783

July         108       222       608

August        91       253       518

September    141       238       537

October      138       193       491

November               421      1570

December              1020      3040

Through

October     1242      2388      5340

Total                 3829      9950

Now I understand not being able to touch the original DS, but selling at half the rate of the PSP?! Smash Brothers doesn't even appear to have given the 3DS any type of boost for October.

New 3DS

New 3ds? And wait for Pokemon as well? Lets not all go to Panic mode here

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

I don't think the New 3DS is going to do much (much like the 2DS hasn't saved the 3DS).

Kids in the West aren't going to be impressed by a analog nub and a faster web browser (who in the world browses the web on the 3DS and its 1999-era resolution screen?). Even Xenoblade is a niche thing here so is Monster Hunter.

The people who should be buying the 3DS should be later adopters who don't browse gaming websites, so I doubt New 3DS is really much of a factor.

The New 3DS really explain how the 3DS has been severely lagging behind both other systems since the beginning of the year....

Yeah good point, New 3DS was not announced until the end of August. Though I really don't think even that is a huge factor.

The people looking at buying a 3DS at this point probably do not read online message boards.

Well its not surprising considering the competition from smartphones. And the New 3DS will help boost sales for another year, But the drop in sales for the 3DS in 2014 compared to 2013 has been huge.

3DS is doing quite alright, since Japan seems to being adopting it, otherwise it would be dead, it's market is being totally overtaken by Smartphones, hardcore gamers would stick to it, but Children now play at Phones and tablets.

Could Nintendo (gulp) possibly fall below 10 million 3DS shipments for the fiscal year? I would hope not but it looks like Japan alone will be down about 1.5-2 million even with the New 3DS, and they only shipped 12 million last year total.

If they're down 1.5-2 million sold in Japan for the year, they must have the US and Euro markets hold steady and right now they're not.

Also I suspect all hardcore Nintendo fans now basically own a 3DS ... because Smash did not move the hardware needle at all, so that indicates everyone who wanted Smash (Nintendo fans) already bought one; makes sense as the Smash fan should be interested in other Nintendo IP.

Nintendo probably is hitting the saturation point of their main fanbase.

New 3ds? Sonds alot like that 2ds jargon people were spewing last time and that didnt help either. If people dont want 3ds now. A more expensive, slightly more powerful one with a nub is not going to sway most of them. Lets not kid ourselves...again.
