Forums - Gaming Discussion - what's wrong with playing a game on casual/easy mode?

sundin13 stole my answer.

I play a large majority of my games on easy/casual mode.

I played all Halo games on easy, and pretty much every game I have played, if I see an easy mode, I will play it. The only games I don't play Easy, are the NHL games (All-Star/Superstar difficulty). And I would love it if Pokemon had a harder difficulty. The only time I'll play on a harder mode is if it requires it for some achievement/trophy. See Infamous SS, KoAR, and a slew of others.

For me personally, I don't get much satisfaction from beating games on hard difficulties. Life is hard enough as it is, why would I make my games harder than I would want. I just prefer being able to breeze through most games without having to die, or restart.

Hell, who knows, it could be some psychological fear of failure that I project to video games from real life....

Not sure what's worse: People caring enough to complain about your gaming habits, or you caring enough about their feedback to create this thread.

To answer your question though, games aren't usually designed to be plowed through effortlessly. By playing on easier difficulties there will be less tactics involved and several gameplay aspects (such as taking cover, using the terrain to your advantage, inventory and ammunition management, figuring out your opponents, etc.) will become obsolete, or at least less vital. Essentially, you are turning the game into a movie with slow story progression and no intensive action.

Obviously you don't get much satisfaction from beating games on hard difficulties. You aren't capable of doing so. xD

Nothing wrong with it, but for me personally necessary for a more unforgettable experience.

Nothing wrong with it. I like it when games don't give you an option for difficulty though, so the only way to play it is the intended way. Like dark souls, R* games, and platformers

I wouldn't say that there is anything wrong with it necessarily. In fact, having the ability to reduce the difficulty can be a good training tool, sort of like a kid learning to ride a bicycle by using training wheels at first. A good example of this for me is Mars Matrix (DC). When I first played the game, the difficulty seemed completely ridiculous. I like to have a decent challenge in a game, but it seemed so hard at first that I didn't even feel like I had a chance. However, I was able to reduce the difficulty by cranking up my lives and credits so that I could start to focus more on learning the patterns without having to worry so much about dying. After lots and lots of practice, I eventually managed to beat the game on the default settings. It was one of the most exciting moments in my 28 years of gaming. If I hadn't been able to reduce the difficulty initially, there's a good chance I would have just given up.

No... I've beaten many games on harder difficulties. I just don't gain satisfaction from doing so, I choose to play on the easy difficulties.

That is, unless, achievements aren't involved of course ;)
