Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why Platinum's games don't sell well?

Too hardcore and visually strange/stylish for the mainstream audience.

Not enough focus on unimportant things (realistic highend visuals).

Not enough handholding.

And another factor I hate about the games is the stupid digital dick size comparing "you wasted 5minutes enjoying the nice scenery we created for this level so you dont get a platinum but only a bronce medal"

Why the hell do I need to be rated while playing a game? Make this optional please.

But that above mentioned problem I have does not prevent me from buying their games. I just close my eyes everytime I see a stupid "LEVEL CLEAR" or whatever "popup" :). I am not interested in stuff like that or trophies etc that have no real purpose. Let me unlock stuff the better I get okay but dont give me a trophy or medal for the sake of giving me a trophy or medal... (Games with challenges like Smash Brawl that unlock stuff that has value is what I want)

Only roughly 10% of todays gamers are gamers so if you dont market it enough and if you cant offer stuff that appeals to the mainstream you have a hard time selling it.

Platinum Games is niche and thats exactly how gaming has to be. Everything that goes mainstream is bad be it music movies etc. (The only exception to the rule is if something got a following when it was still niche and then with alot of luck became mainstream. Stuff that is directly made to be mainstream on the other hand is always bad)

And a lot of their games suck. Let's not beat around the bush.

A lot? Besides The Legend of Korra and maybe MadWorld, what Platinum-developed game suck? :/

Sorry.  Was thinking of Suda 51.

I own quite a few Platinum games (Vanquish, Anarchy, MGR, Bayo 1 & 2) and I guess my biggest gripe is that they're niche and kinda short.

I don't think it's short, Bayonetta 1 took me about 20 hours to complete first playthrough, and chapter 1 of B2 2 hours. (with exploration and musphelheims ect.)

They are not popular games because it's not in one of those shooter/sport/adventure/rpg genres. They are niche for no reason imho.
But you can't stop them from doing a genre they are best at.

Not sure what type of playthrough you'd have to do to take 20 hours to complete Bayonetta. It's a 10 hour game.

simple gamers these days prefer crap (cod ac bf fifa ) year after year never willing to give the actual good games a chance and that will be the down fall of gaming. just now all game studios will begin to push out generic games that follow the same formula

Platinum games just aren't marketed well, and from just by looking there games there doesn't seem to be anything that really stands out that would want gamers to pick it up.

I, however, love Bayonetta (my fav hack & slash) and Vanquish was really fun. Platinum games deserves more credit then it's given. MGS:R was also a nice take on the series in their own way. I'm always looking forward to their next games.

4. They make them on the wrong systems

Simply said: Platinum games are niche.
They differ a lot from popular genres like FPS, TPS, Sports.... the hack´n´slash genre feels like the old beat´em-ups for today´s players. Many will find the games repetitive.

I´m glad they´re still around and getting contracts.

Since most of their games underperform commercially (the only exception being MG Rising??..not sure), one might think no publisher would want to give them something to work on, glad that´s not the case.

This is so true..... many people may not agree, but the first Bayonetta is a great example. Despite selling 2 million copies (in two consoles), no one wanted to fund and publish the sequel.... until Nintendo stepped in.  So probably Platinum games are not so profitable as they wanted them to be.

Most gamers don't like the games they make. But it's not too late, From Software was small time as well and they made the gem known as Demon's Souls and the rest is history.

If they were crap they would've never sold the amount they do.

Gaming industry was always like this, the popular games sell more and niche less. Some genres become nearly obsolete and others thrive.
