"You were conceived with love and for a different purpose before you flourished in the late 20th century. How the world was different then, when you were a simple playing card company from Koyoto, Japan. If you would have known what fate had in store for you, would have lived your life any different? Kings and Queens, much like you dear friend, are destined to rise and to fall. Unfornutally it looks like it’s time for the later, at least for your relationship with video games.
Playing Cards
You had no need to consult the stars, or the oracle of Delphi to know that manufacturing decks of playing cards adorned with Disney characters was not the path fate had set for you. You dabbled and experimented for years, chased dreams and fought adversity. Your life wasn’t easy, out there, in the cold and cruel world. So many times you had assumed you struck gold, so many times you came home empty-handed. Was it a divine vision that came to you, was it a phantasm, a little bird or intuition that directed you into the highly competitive Japanese toy industry? Could you see what lay ahead of you on the distant horizon?
The Future is Near
By the middle of the 1970s could you tell you were getting close to finding your niche? Were you aware of your role as the catalyst and the culture for the explosion that will become the video game industry in the not so distant future? At the decade’s end you started to see moderate success with your ventures in the new and alien world of video games.
In the 1980s while the muses inspired your creative teams, you shook the earth as the force from the impact of a thousand ton meteor. You didn’t introduce us to the home console but you made, console gaming a staple in most homes. You captivated us with lovable characters and brought them to life with a dazzling combination of eight different colors. Not only had you pioneered the handheld video game system but set the standards for your competitors. All over the world children’s hands clutched tightly to your rectangular controller with red A and B buttons, our eyes adhered to tube television sets. We stayed absorbed with blistered thumbs for hours after school, entire weekends, holidays and vacations. You introduced and taught a generation about philosophy, herpetology, myths, legends, golf and motorcycle racing, among other t hings.
The Rockstar Life
You lived life with a rock star status. Mario, Luigi, Link, Zelda and so many others, were introduced by you and accepted into our homes, families and hearts. Other company’s now created decks of playing cards adorned with your animated family of heroes and villains. The populace pondered on how video games could get any better and you answered our query with 16 bit graphics then 64 bit graphics and on and on. We held your game cartridges above our love for god and country. We performed rituals to appease the Nintendo Gods when cartridges became old, dusty and too stubborn to play.
Your reign as matriarch lasted well into the new millennium. Where other systems pandered to an adult audience, you remained true to yourself and marketed yourself as a family friendly console. Sadly, that was your Achilles heel. One can only speculate the low-brow possibilities and depths of depravity you could have sunk to, but you will be remembered for remaining true for your own stark self honesty, in a world wrought with deception and smut.
Nintendo, your life was long and one that brought great joy to the lives of so many. We peer now to great distances because of your shoulders on which we stand. You may cease producing new consoles, but as long as there are online stores, cult audiences, and gamers your name, you will be talked about forever."
