Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Xbone fails to outsell Ps4 despite biggest launch of year

I don't quite understand what you're trying to demonstrate - there appears to be a step missing in your argument.

What was it about outselling the PS4 one week of the year that would have been the Xbox One's saviour? More to the point, was is it about failing to do that this week that should particularly worry Microsoft?

Is your concept that anything other than first place in this console cycle will result in failure? Is it that failing to win this week just gone worldwide will substantially influence Microsoft's long-term sales, potential for profit or ability to attract large games?

And whether this does or does not worry Microsoft (I suspect it does not worry them at all), why would a relatively niche title (Bloodborne) or new IP that has received mediocre press (The Order) cause them to substantially shift in either direction?

I think its more likely that Microsoft will look at the steps they have taken, look at the dramatic improvement in their market position in the last few weeks, and be quite pleased.

what is a niche title for you?

I said relatively. Certainly compared to Halo.

Ultimately though it is a title of moderate sales, extreme difficulty and horror themes (or so we assume, based on the past titles that represent the reason people want this game!).

Bloodborne will be a good game but, with the exception of a few die hard Souls fans, Bloodborne will not push sales of the ps4. It's just not a mainstream title.

The Order is already receiving criticism from reveiwers, and rightly so. It looks like generic trash, has already had it's graphics downgraded, has a ridiculous aspect ratio, will be 24fps for a "cinematic feel" (and it will still probably drop into the lower 20s like every other game so far this gen). This game will not live up to any hype it initially had, and the developers should consider themselves very lucky if they manage to receive a metascore of 75. Again, this game will not push ps4 sales.

It looks unlikely that the ps4 will have any critically acclaimed exclusives until Uncharted 4 comes out. And that game is the one I am holding out for before getting a ps4.

It's a shame for Microsoft that they shit the bed with their launch; despite not having any good exclusives, people will still buy the ps4 in droves as their multiplat machine. If the Xbone does not outsell the ps4 worldwide on Black Friday week, I doubt it will ever win a week over it. First impressions last.

I'm going to assume you're making this stuff up as you along, because you go three things wrong within the space of a single sentence ^^;

1) The Order has not been been graphically downgraded. In-fact since its original reveal its been upgraded (similar to DriveClub, though not to quite that level). Some people thought it was downgraded due to a large change in the art direction, less gloom and some some asset changes, such as costumes: http://i.imgur.com/FlFE2U1.jpg (left 2013 build, right 2014).

2) It's not 24fps, it's 30.

3) Only a minority of next-gen titles drop into the low 20's on a regular basis (such as ACU and Ryse), and a larger group, though still overall a minority, drop to it on occasion during stress tests (which is acceptable, providing it doesn't happen outside of those resource peak situations). That's not exactly 'every other game so far this gen'.

I'd also like to point out that The Order's aspect ratio is fine. I won't say your outright wrong, because its mostly a matter of preference, but they haven't simply cut off parts of the screen like what was done in TEW. They extending the viewing range as well, so you're essentially just swapping less view space on the top and bottom for more on the left and right. Its an odd choice, but it could work well for what they want to accomplish.

I'd like to take a minute to talk about this. The Xbone failed to outsell the Ps4 this week (worldwide) despite it's biggest game (Halo) launching.

I'd be very worried if I were Microsoft right now. Think about it.

Look at all the issues the Ps4 and Sony are having right now: Driveclub (broken), LBP (bugs/bad reviews), firmware 2.0, no big AAA games. And then take a look at everything RIGHT that the Xbone and Microsoft are doing: Sunset Overdrive, Halo Collection, working firmware, very VERY VERY cheap prices everywhere with cuts.

And still, the Ps4 managed to outsell the Xbone this week.

I'd seriously be very worried if I were in the Xbox camp.

With Bloodborne around the corner looking to be promising (March) and the Order hopfully deliver on it's hype (Feb), plus Uncharted in the near future, AND Sony still has a price cut up it's sleeve????

Does not look good.

Meanwhile Nintendo continues to underdeliver on sales, getting destroyed by the other two consoles, yet just dropped two of the most critically acclaimed next gen games so far with Bayonetta 2 and Smash Bros (probably my favorite series of ALL time).

Go figure. Thoughts?

How do you know blood borne and the order gonna be good games ? Sony is always been Good at releasing broken game

It's not really a win when you are bleeding tons of money to temporarly win 2 regions (which you had locked in last gen) while still selling less consoles overall.

Microsoft is in to make money and have the biggest possible marketshare they can, this nonsense about only caring about US and UK is really dumb

I think MS would be pleased with the sales increase especially in the US and UK. That doesn't mean they not trying in other regions and only care about US/UK.

I also think that MS definitely cares about market share, all 3 consoles manufacturers care a great deal about their sales in comparison to other competing products. Anyone who says that a manufacturers is completely unconcerned about their competitors and only cares about profits and sales in isolation is in complete denial and a bit naive.

MS knows that once a console becomes the preferred console in a particular region, it becomes increasingly difficult for competitors over time. I think MS felt this was happening with the PS4 in the US and they reacted quite strongly to it. This was done with the motivation of gaining market share and mind share. If all they cared about was profit they would keep the price as is.

I think MS would be happy with what its achieved with the price cut and the bundle. Ultimately MS would have wanted to greatly increase their sales and competitiveness. Winning November NPD would just be in addition to that. But this shows signs of good interest in the console and that the fight isnt over. What would be concerning, was if MS cut price and still fell far short of PS4 sales...then they probably would have been worried. So yeah i dont agree with OP after the last couple weeks of sales.

Intel Core i7 3770K [3.5GHz]|MSI Big Bang Z77 Mpower|Corsair Vengeance DDR3-1866 2 x 4GB|MSI GeForce GTX 560 ti Twin Frozr 2|OCZ Vertex 4 128GB|Corsair HX750|Cooler Master CM 690II Advanced|

Well, considering Japan will always be a lost cause for MS, and EU bring Playstation land (and has been since PS1), I think they did pretty damn good. We all know Sony has already won this gen, the question is how much of a fight MS will put up.

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

I don't know if MS will ever take it WW. It's always been a US and UK type of console.

Clearly where MS is winning or close to it the company is competeing.  Where it is being blown out of the water (Everywhere other than US,  UK, and China) it is not competing and those areas are irrelevant.

Why would you be worried when you just sold 440k units in a one week?

I'm sure MS would love to be top dog, but I'm also sure they're happy with how X1 is selling. I think people quickly forget that the PS3 was the leading system (between it and 360) worldwide for pretty much all of last gen. You don't launch a year later and then surpass the competition, without outselling the competition.
