Well, apparantly online features can change the scores of games dramatically (see DriveClub and in a lesser degree Halo MCC). And even though one year has passed I still think that Killzone SF should receive much higher scores.
As of this week I started playing Killzone again on my PS4 and damn. I don't know what happened but this multiplayer game is amazing. It is my favorite FPS shooter of the year.
The gameplay is smooth, even with much action and chaos around the framerate and handling never fails making it an amazing experience with the current graphics it showcases. Furthermore I have the feeling that through all those updates the adaptive horizontal resolution isn't that much present as during launch but I could be mistaken. The maps looks amazing and I really like the feel and intensity of some maps while others have great level design or dynamic features. All maps are clearly different from each other making every game refreshing. The heaviness and robustness is still great and all the weapons (after various balancing and gameplay adjustments.) feel amazing.
But the great thing now is that it really takes some skill to make a difference within the game and because of the way everything is set-up making this difference is really possible and now also rewarding. (rewards, challenges, upgrades and a leveling system all contribute to this. And of course humiliating the enemy as the MVP). Extended Warzone is great gamemode and probably the best. The community that is left is all fixated in objectives which means that pace is good, games keep on being interesting and exciting which is something that not many shooters lately achieved. I remember converting a 0 - 3 in a 5 - 3 yesterday and hell. It was really difficult to cause the turnaround but everyone contributed to that which was great.
So I give the current state of the MP a 9.5/10 as it remembers me of KZ2 but has it's own vibe.
Maybe you guys think it is too high however consider this:
- Graphics are really great (absurd on some maps)
- Gameplay stays smooth (45-60 fps) and never bothers
- The maps are different, level design is great and the new additions are amazing (total of 17 is fine)
- Weapons feel and act different just like the attachments
- Abilities are balanced and really form the character of each soldier. (Turrets and Drones are easy to conquer when focused but can also be used for some great strategies and tactics just like all the other abilities)
- Reward and challenge system is great and something new
