This thread is mostly in response to the idea that Nintendo could be "saved" by Disney as well as the hints that Nintendo is looking into mergers/acquisitions from last year. Let's discuss this further. Would you prefer Nintendo to buy a company outright, be bought by one outright, or merge with someone? I'll list out the 10 most likely or popular options that I can think of but if you have one of your own please share below!

Personally, I've always viewed Nintendo the Disney of the gaming industry, therefore if they had to be bought by someone I'd prefer Disney (then we would see Nintendo all over ABC, the Disney channels, ESPN... and so many other things lol). That's just my opinion though!

They should buy Crytek and Gunfire games, and fund Mistwalker to make a real series out of Last Story. I'll talk about why later.

lol Sony buyout of Nintendo? Somehow i find it more possible the other way around.

A buyout from Disney would be very empowering to them, thats for sure. They would get the marketing budget they arent willing to spend and would get exclusives on star wars and marvel games. EA already has that deal though, so i dont think Disney finds them that desirable.

As for Nintendo buying someone. Capcom would be beneficial, SEGA sadly is worthless nowadays. Capcom has RE wich is still popular in the west, Street Fighter aswell. SEGA at this point is a waste of time. They are worthless.

Capcom would be the best. Mega Man would be revived. Street Fighter games would be Nintendo exclusives and Resident Evil games could return to their roots. Capcom has a lot of good franchises it's been misusing.

No offense but is this a joke thread? Polygon article itself was a joke article. Have you seen this in the article or just read the title?

And it wont be happening. Nintendo has enough cash and not in dire need of money. It survived 125 years. Plus it wont be getting capcom or SEGA. They dont match Nintendo point of view.

I'll cum if Nintendo buys Capcom.

A Sony and Nintendo merger/aqcuisition would end the world as we know it.

I would really rather see Nintendo form a cartel of AA developers--places like Mistwalker, or even teams in large companies given tight budgets. The last generation has been really unkind to AA developers because the arms race in graphics is well into diminishing returns.

It would go something like this:

  1. Nintendo provides a console which is easy to develop for and pads out a library of their own AAA games which don't push the system's graphical capacities.
  2. AA developers make games which emphasize gameplay and content over keeping up with PC graphics.
  3. Nintendo ensures the games are fun to play and puts a Nintendo seal on them.
  4. Profit for Nintendo and AA developers.

Where Nintendo goofed this go-round was the Wii U's chipset, which isn't as easy to dev for as x86. AA and indy dev teams are more likely to risk PS4 or PC waters just because it's easier to develop for those systems.

That said, most of the ideas on the thread are outright ludicrous (as others have said). Sony would never spin-off PS4, and they don't have the money to buy Nintendo. Microsoft's marketing is completely incompatable with Nintendo, and they need Rare to make all those shitty Kinect games. Capcom and SEGA are in less risky situations if they pick which console they want to dev for. Disney would have to make their one successful gaming brand--Kingdom Hearts--a Nintendo exclusive.

I do think that Square Enix or Sony selling some unused IPs to Nintendo could go some great places. Nintendo badly needs more JRPGs and horror content. Parasite Eve, Chrono, Legend of Dragoon, these are all IPs which would be great for Nintendo to have, especially when they have such a great RPG dev team in Monolith Soft. Sony badly needs the money and S-E has its hands full with other projects.

I'd rather see Nintendo buy studios. Buyouts or mergers are not needed.
What Nintendo really needs is western studios that can develop genres that western gamers love the most.

From a japanese point of view, Nintendo could buy Sega, Capcom or even Namco.
All of them still have important franchises that can are alive and well or that can be revamped.

From a western point of view, Nintendo needs a few good and big studios that can create new franchises in the shooter, racing, open world, sports genre to help replace the lack of 3rd parties.

I personally believe that Nintendo should just expand their current teams.

Retro & Intelligent Systems should both expand in size while the Splatoon team should become their own studio.
