Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why so stubborn? What's really wrong with digital media?

PSN prices in the UK are ridiculous. It's so much cheaper here to buy physical which sucks because I have switching discs.

I like you display that opened up PS3. Did it YLOD on you?

Yep, 60GB launch version. It was the 2nd time it got YLOD and I had to break it open to get my disk back. Very nicely build machine, except for the solder problem.

The circuit board on the left is a 2KB memory module from the 70's. It's bigger than the entire ps3.

I travel a lot, and I like to take my games with me, so it's much easier to take just a system with games installed to it / downloadable, than it is to haul the system and individual games, this is why handheld gaming works for physical cards, you can buy those little pouches that hold 50+ carts in a very small box that you can take with you, trying to do the same with standard console games with optical media is just a headache because they either take up way too much room or are way to easy to damage.

But then, I can download/install a modern 40gb+ game in minutes where I live so it makes more sense for me to go digital, if i was living in the sticks in the UK/EU/US and surviving on poor speed dialup/adsl, Digital is the last thing I would do.

New games still cost the same,if not more than physical discs.

Literally my only issue....

Oh, have you finished all of those games listed?
Not really an issue to stop me buying them but you'd save even more money if you only bought games that you really want instead of what's cheap. There's no way you get through them all.

I was thinking about color-coding games I've completed, lol...  Oh, why not...  But, no. I haven't, and those are JUST from this year.  Not last year, or the year before that, and so on.

I don't mind buying digital if the offer is really good, but since I'm a bit of a collector I do prefer non digital versions if possible. And in case of indies, which rarely even come out on disc, I have really no problem buying them, especially not during some sale.

There's nothing wrong with digital media itself. The problem I have is the higher than disc prices, and not having any ability to give/lend/resell my purchase. I'm willing to give up those rights for a significant discount.

For me, digital is a necessity. I'm Nigerian and I live in Nigeria. Anything shipped into the country will have its price marked up. So $60 games are sold for the equivalent of about $80 here. Also, its harder to find certain genres/series of games because they're not popular with the average Nigerian. It's just so much more convenient for me to go digital. (And I don't have a huge backlog like the OP)

In addition to the reasons stated above, there's hardly a store in Nigeria that lets people trade in used games. So almost every single advantage of physical games cited by people in this thread doesn't apply to the Nigerian gamer. Going digital is the way to go here.

My thread for teaching VGC some Nigerian slangs

I'd go digital if the companies guaranteed the PSN/XBL/NN wouldn't get disabled on the current systems when they got to be 20 years old. And let you lend your copies, without any form of BS, period. Shareplay doens't count. You license of the game gets disabled. And your friend gets the license no matter how long your friend wants it. Till he is done with the game. Oh, but than people will sell the games to their friends that way as well. Gives selling back to users in that function, at least.

Nothing against digital, if it's like GOG. But I still prefer to be able to choose each time.
