Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why so stubborn? What's really wrong with digital media?

IBeyond: Two Soul also dropped.  Got it release day...  I guess I've answered my question.  But, I love each of those games, and glad I got them on release day. I beat beyond 10 times.  Five consecutive without playing any other games inbetween.  I can't do it an 11th time, because I'm all burnt out on that game, lol.  But, I enjoyed it so much, and I got the steel book, I don't mind paying 60, for it or TTT2.

Nice to see another person who seems to have enjoyed the game as mcuh as I did.

I tend to sell my games after I am done with them. Can't do that with digital.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

Game sizes are so huge now that its difficult to go completely digital. You are forced to spend a hundred more dollars on a hard drive.

So if people don't agree with you they are stubborn?

Price is subjective, I can (and do) buy used games and they can be as cheap as the digital version.
I usually go to play with friends in their houses, and it's super easy to just pick a physical game and tale there to play, they don't need to own it.
HD's also don't last forever, nothing does, not to say they are not infinite, so you also have to invest a little in it over time.

But I do agree digital have their advantages too.

I think now that's so relevant we should be getting digital copies of our games when we buy it physical versions, as a back up. Should be mandatory.

Being stubborn isn't always a bad thing. If used and digital are the same price, I'd go with digital. Used is going to be in bad condition, usually, if it's dirt cheap. Not include the manual, full of dirt, and whatever else. Some people just aren't clean. I go to friends too, but, we usually bring our PS3s with us when we go somewhere. We all have the bigger models too. There's not always a need to do it, though. Only when one of us doesn't have a particular game. If I want a digital version of a physical game, sadly, I just re-buy it...

That's not what the hole in the center of the disc is used for. You're going to hurt yourself.

Even if you do happen to get banned, why not just make a back-up of everything?

This scenario is essentially pirating, as you no longer have the account which all of the game licenses are tied to.

Yeah, I suppose you have a point.

As long as you take good care of the discs, you'll be dead long before there's an issue with them. DVDs and Blurays have several layers of protection added, so as long as they're taken care of, they have an infinite life expectancy.

I really don't care if the media I own stops working after I'm deceased.

Well, digital media is fine... if you use GOG.com, because they actually let you backup and basically do whatever you want with your games after you bought 'em, also, they fix old games to work on new PC's. Steam is fine too, it just bothers me that a lot of the games on there requires you to use additional clients/launchers (uPlay much?) and in some cases requires you to create an account in order to play (Ex.: Anna Ext. Edition). Also, unrelated.. why the heck people let terrible games be approved on Steam Greenlight? (Grass Simulator, I'm looking at you).

As for consoles, I kinda prefer to have the discs, makes for a good looking collection =P

Because this:

All generations together, with the freedom to trade in what I don't want to keep.
Never worry about HDDs getting full or breaking, download caps, download speeds, network problems, lifetime / continued availability of titles. Plus there are still the occasional extras, for example Civ Beyond earth included a full size poster, GTA5 a map, for the same price as a digital file. Besides it would take me days to download GTA5 and use up 70% of my monthly data cap.

Psychological insecurity. You can back up digital games and not disc based. But what if something goes wrong and the game goes away? I can't physically touch my game like I can touch the disc. Unless it's stolen, no one can "meddle" with my games. Also, I can loan and be loaned games from friends without a middleman dictating what I do with my own property.

This isn't my mindset but I can imagine it's a lot of folks. It's mostly irrational but could be a reason.

Maybe there's something I'm missing about this.

Yes, you are. You're thinking about it in practical ways but alot of it is abstract. It's subconscious.

We all evolved in the same way. Human beings had to survive by attaining objects like tools, meat, clothes etc. The more you had, the more likely you were to survive. This is why people hoard things. It's an evolutionary trait that's going haywire due to modern consumption and the ease of obtaining things compared to early man.

This is where physical media comes in. If holding an object helps signal to the brain that you do indeed OWN something, then digital presents a problem. You can't hold a file. You can see it, but there is a screen... a barrier. Your brain is trying to figure this out but it struggles to come to terms with the fact that you have something you can't hold in your hands.

That's the problem with digital taking over the industry. I don't think it's going to happen until generations die off and even then, I'm not so sure it'll happen entirely. We are, again, hardwired against it. It's foreign to us.

On PC though; this is hardly a problem, you can get a fast (7200RPM) 1TB drive for about 100$ or less and I've seen 3TB drives for around 150$ as well. I can easily save those sums on game purchases in a year or two since I get great prices on digital games all the time.

GOG and Steam cover all my needs for gaming now, and I actually only have a 500GB drive for games, I just have to be smart about what I install and not, having 20-30 games or more installed at all times is useless. The most annoying thing I can think of with digital only is if you have poor connections speeds; it will take a long-ass time to download many modern titles on a slow line. Luckily; I don't have any issues there either!

Digital only is not for everyone and with the PSN's average speed in my house(s), I think I'd prefer retail as well, to be honest. I only have classics on my PS3 and even those take a long time to download even on a good connection.
