Forums - Sony Discussion - Is the PS4 a blue ocean product?

Nintendo is following more this philosophy than Sony. Many times they showed their intentions to not be in the consoles race. It might make sense when u see the videogame industry the way it is at the moment

It's red with purple edges.

I think a real blue ocean product was the iPod. The branding and popularity was so strong that all mp3 players regardless of maker were referred to as iPod's by consumers.

The PS4 is just a gimmick.

I was going to rebrand my title as a "purple" product.

While Sony acknowledges its competition, it reacts as if there are not any.  Especially when it comes to price.  You have to go back 12 years to find the last time Sony did not slash the price on a home console in its first calendar year, in the face of cheaper competition.

No.

I don't believe goes under blue ocean strategy - mainly because PS4 battles competition:

- remember E3 2013 and how they deliberately last minute offered lower price level $399 by removing camera?

- they use the phrase "world's most powerful console" in the advertising which is obviously direct comparison to XBOne

- at its core PS4 is a pure gaming console (like PS2 or X360) and appeals to mainstream gaming market which means they did not create the new market aka "blue ocean"

PS4 is the king on red ocean gaming product

I agree but I do feel that Sony is taking some blue ocean tips (especially value innovation) in making the PS4 successful, outside one quarter the console has been highly profitable for them (better than the PS3 days, and above the PS2 its first fiscal year) and the division is growing by leaps and bounds.

Q2 2014: +82%

Q1 2014: +96%

2014 +40% over 2013.

Well value is vague in terms, the same with service, and all of that are intengible. If we talk about market share and market pie share,  PS4 is competing with Xbox One , and some Wii U games.

Unlike Wii that didn't have any competiton on their teritory on last gen (un directly ).

It seems like one of the most red ocean consoles ever made. Fine by me, but fail to see it coming close to Wii like blue ocean demographics.

Growth != blue ocean.

This generation will be far below the last in terms of total consoles sold, all said and done. PS4 will just have cannibalized what other companies got before, the sign of a stagnant/declining industry.
