Does GTA 5's Sex With Prostitutes In First Person Promote Rape Culture?

November 19, 2014

In response to the increase in arguments about whether or not many sexualized things in both the media and in the general public promote Rape Culture, we at 1MG pose the question to you, does GTA:5 First Person Mode Prostitute Sex promote Rape Culture?

The day GTA:5 next-gen was released, there was a huge number of videos posted on YouTube involving prostitutes both having sex and giving blowjobs in the front of the protagonists car, in the view of the first person. This poses the question on whether or not we as a society have become too comfortable with the increase in sexualisation in woman.

Is it a bad sign that such a large amount of people jumped instantly to post this particular part of the game to YouTube? Ourselves included.

Do you believe that the millions of boys aged 13-17 who will most definitely find themselves either watching these YouTube videos, or playing the game themselves, are being taught that using woman as physical objects is part of being a man, falling into the same basket as GTA's video game violence? Or do you believe that these young boys will see past that and view this as purely a video game.

We ask these questions as to get a better understanding of how you the 1MG audience, see video games and their effect on our culture and whether or not you believe that people in general can enjoy a game without being changed by it.

Here at 1MG, we too have hastily put up our own GTA:5 Prostitute Sex video, tell us audience, are we now supporting Rape Culture?

I would say that the video in the article is too risque and of bad taste, so I will just link you to the gaming site and not the actual article..

well yes because we are rapidly approaching a situation where any instance of sex between man and woman is going to be considered rape by the man on the woman

Prostitute > rape.

Implying they didn't knew what they signed up for.

WTF is wrong with some peole? You don't become a rapist from a video game. You need that special "fucked up in the head" as well...

I don't understand. Aren't women physical objects? Just like a baby, or a horse, or a car, or a video game console, or a man for that matter. Using women as mental objects is called masturbation.

a) Prostitution isn't rape
b) Portraying an act is not the same as promoting it
c) If we haven't been able to prove the effect of video game violence, how is this in any way a reputable claim?
d) How would this have any greater effect than pornography?
e) We have the ESRB to prevent younger teens from playing games like this...let parents do the parenting

Yes. A normal person doesnt go around raping or killing people because they saw it in a video game or movie.

The day you were born a man you been branded a rapist and pedophile so society already promotes it.

Can't piss of a girl cause she will claim rape.

Can't play with kids or have a camera on the beach cause you will be a pedo.

It promotes it as much as it did when it was 3rd person. Difference is you can see it up close now which makes it more of a "threat". I dont play GTA and if it is just prostitutes and not actual rape -then it doesnt promote rape. Prostitutes maybe. But thats a whole other topic XD
