Forums - Gaming Discussion - Microsoft started the bloodiest price war in console history?

This is good still haven't purchased my PS4 yet. Now if we actually get a decent exclusive i might buy it. Only game that peaked my interest so far is Bloodborne, not sure i'm gonna dish out 400€ for 1 game. Primarily a PC gamer so wont buy a single multiplatform game for anything but PC.

So far we're two years into the 8th gen, and already Nintendo and M$ have had to do some serious price cutting / bundling due to lagging sales and strong competition.

This is the most aggressive wave of price drops / deals I've seen for the first year all systems in a single gen were on the market since May 2002, when Sony and M$ slashed the prices of the PS2 and Xbox by $100 to $199, and Nintendo subsequently dropped the price of the GC $50 to $149.

A similar price war occurred in May of '96 (see a pattern here... E3 strikes again!) when SEGA slashed the Saturn's price tag in half from $399 to $199, and Sony slashed the PS1's price tag from $299 to $199 to match the announced launch price of the N64 which was released in September.

wut? PS2 came out in 2000. They didn't drop price in the first year. And it wasn't an "aggressive" move for it to cut the price 2 year later. It was just the right time, per se, to do it. Xbox and GCN, on the other hand. They dropped price within 6 months of release. Because they were getting obliterated by PS2.

Read my post again... I said for the first year that ALL consoles of a single generation were on the market.  I know the PS2 came out in 2000, but the Xbox / GC didn't come out until Nov 2001, so of course Sony wasn't going to drop the price of the PS2 because it had zero competition for the first year and a half of its life aside from the Dreamcast, which was pretty much DOA anyway at that point.

It was an aggressive price drop on the part of ALL 3 console manufacturers... M$ announced they were slashing the price of the Xbox by 1/3, and  Sony matched it with the PS2 while Nintendo came out with a smaller but significant price drop of their own.  And Xbox and GC weren't getting "obliterated" at that point, they both had just come off successful holiday launches and were trying to keep momentum going against Sony.

Of course, when your console has an 18 month head start and one of the most popular games in the world at the time as an exclusive (GTAIII), it's not hard to see why M$ and Nintendo weren't able to gain ground on Sony.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Don't you need two to tango in a price war?

Well, you can tango alone. It's just sad to watch.

This isnt a bloody price war. MS is desperate and they can afford to cut price for the holiday season. Its as simple as that. Sony is the only company they will take the risk for. Even with the Wii they never adjusted their prices to pose a threat to them last gen.

Unless MS drops the price of the console to like $249 next year or Sony stops making the PS4 then yeah this generation is pretty much set. Which is not a bad thing it is not like the XB1 will not sell well because I personally think it will the PS4 will just sell better. So no big deal either way in my book...

Actually no this gen is not set.  Both companies can stumble or screw up.  Both companies can have misses on games they bring out that are exclusive to the system or they can have huge AAA success.  The transformation of each console over the years could also make a difference how both are perceived.  Nothing is set in Stone and neither company has shown that they cannot F up and allow the other to gain momentum.

As for the deals MS is doing now, this is just Holiday positioning since these 2 months can be larger than the majority of the year.  MS has to make a big push and they are coming out with guns blazing.  Sony is in a position of strength so they can be more conservative.  It's pretty simple, the dominate player has more options while the other must make every move possible to continue growth and momentum.  This was no different Last gen when MS was on top.

While I agree without a doubt that both companies can screw up for Sony to lose this they would basically have to lose Europe all together or do something INSANE like raise the price of the PS4 by like $100 dollars or stop manufacturing it. Or go bankrupt....The reason Sony did so well last Gen when MS was on top was because they were MUCH bigger WW than MS and as far as gaming goes they still are. They had all of Europe, Japan and ROW to fall back on. MS does not have that luxury which is what makes me think this gen is set. I am positive both MS and Sony will have some HUGE AAA success stories and some fails as well. But for this gen to end anywhere near how last gen ended with the PS3/360 basically being a tie a HUGE downfall will have to occur with Sony IMO. Now yes I can very well be wrong and anything can indeed happen. But with the way things looks it is very unlikely...again imo.

Sony did well last gens because they outdeveloped Microsoft and outperformed them worldwide.

Really??? So were you present in the first 3 years of the PS3 on the self or you just ignored all the moves Sony made in order to drop the price of the PS3 as much as possible while taking a lost on the system for years. Pretty much the majority of the PS3 lifespan Sony had to drop price cut any type of profits to maintain any decent marketshare against the 360.
