Forums - Gaming Discussion - Microsoft started the bloodiest price war in console history?

I don't see how it can be the bloodiest price war when the only countries where MS has a hope of price dropping its way to relevance, and Sony feeling any sort of need to respond, are USA and UK (sure Canada too, but it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things).

MS has put in place an official price cut. So far Sony hasn't budged on official prices. Where is this price war? Bundles? They happen all the time, it's part of creating value without having to adjust price and they always turn up as the first move in response to the cost of production going down.

If retailers are getting into a price war then it's as much about internal competition (attracting the Xb one buyers away from other retailers) as it is about external competition (PS4 vs Xb one).

So far we're two years into the 8th gen, and already Nintendo and M$ have had to do some serious price cutting / bundling due to lagging sales and strong competition.

This is the most aggressive wave of price drops / deals I've seen for the first year all systems in a single gen were on the market since May 2002, when Sony and M$ slashed the prices of the PS2 and Xbox by $100 to $199, and Nintendo subsequently dropped the price of the GC $50 to $149.

A similar price war occurred in May of '96 (see a pattern here... E3 strikes again!) when SEGA slashed the Saturn's price tag in half from $399 to $199, and Sony slashed the PS1's price tag from $299 to $199 to match the announced launch price of the N64 which was released in September.

What's the point of this GIF?

I think it depicts Microsoft going straight into Nintendo, but out of nowhere Sony comes in and takes out MS. The aftermath being Nintendo just rides off like nothing happened...

No way bro...  look at the price cut history for PS1/N64 during the 5th gen...

wut? PS2 came out in 2000. They didn't drop price in the first year. And it wasn't an "aggressive" move for it to cut the price 2 year later. It was just the right time, per se, to do it. Xbox and GCN, on the other hand. They dropped price within 6 months of release. Because they were getting obliterated by PS2.

inflation and stuff ? who knows what will happen next year.

those numbers are funny same price drop every time except in 2002 because N64 got discounted.

What war??? Ps4 is outselling x1 WW easily even with x1 at 349, and now even the US acording to a major retailer on GAF:

QUOTE:

Well, guys - I wouldn't really count the month as already spoken for yet. Honestly, our districts had the big explosion of XB1 sales right at the beginning, but now, the PS4 is selling more than the XB1 again. And it's not even neck and neck for daily/weekly sales, the PS4 is selling just outright better again. And we're receiving a lot of questions about the PS4 bundles for BF, discussions about how early people are allowed to line up to be able to get those bundles...

GTA V is also selling definitively better on the PS4. We had a big rush of people picking up the console with that game. The price cut helped convince a lot of people that were on the fence right at the beginning of the month, but at this point... We'll have to see exactly how BF goes. I can't call it either way.

If it wasn't a price war the PS4 wouldn't be throwing in free games this Holiday.   I mean what would be the point if they were still outselling in a rate you mentioned.  You don't lower prices or add free games for the hell of it.  Or dig in to your profits.

HUH black friday how does it work?? LOL Sony bundles ahve nothing to do with MS price drop and everything to do with the yearly black fri bundles.

Black Friday is the epitome of competition - no brand, product and/or store have sales and discounts for the heck of it, particularly for Blaxk Friday -  they so it because that is the time all the brands, products and retailers are making the best effort they need to stay competitive for the biggest shopping time of the year
If they did not feel the need to offer discounts to remain competitive on Black fri they would not do so

Haters'

" in console history" is a little bit exaggerate.

What price war? Microsoft is the only one fighting in this "price war".
