This is something I started wondering about recently - with the games already out, the features the system has, the upcoming titles and more, is the Wii U becoming the definitive Nintendo console? I'll separate my thoughts in 2 minor topics and one major one:
- Backwards compatibility.
This might not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about a "definitive" console, but I can't ignore the crazy variety of controller options the Wii U offers. You can play games on this console with pretty much every controller Nintendo made since the 6th gen, even if obviously most games only support a few of them - there's literally options for every taste here. And not only are there several controller options to choose between, but Nintendo can potentially develop a huge classic library on their system - we already have plenty with the NES, SNES, GBA and Wii compatibility, and I think it's safe to assume N64 and DS are on the way too. If they can bring GameCube titles to the system as well, the backwards compatibility library would be enormours, spanning every home console they've made and half of their handhelds.
- Graphics.
This point might be questionable as no console is ever "definitive" in terms of graphics - its successor will always be naturally more powerful, and thus provide better visuals. However, with Nintendo's usually stylized visuals in HD, most games are looking incredible on the console and I never feel like the graphics should have been better when playing them - hell, there's even some titles I can't even imagine looking better when I look at pictures (Mario Kart 8). For these, literally the only improvement left is higher resolution. This has never been the case with Nintendo's previous hardware outings.
- Them games.
Well this is obviously the major topic here. The way I see it, a Nintendo console is only the "definitive" one if it has at least one good game in every major first-party franchise, and every system they've made so far has failed to do that. Chances are the Wii U will also not achieve this, but it could happen. Here's the breakdown:
Note: just another reminder, I'm only considering them if they're good games that are widely accepted by the fans as a genuine entry into the series. This means GCN Star Fox titles, Metroid: Other M and stuff like that wouldn't count. Animal Crossing - safe to assume we'll get one eventually. Donkey Kong - check. Fire Emblem - might skip this console, but I have my doubts about it's "major" status. And there's SMGxFE (if that's still a thing). F-Zero - this is the only major franchise I see skipping the Wii U. It's the one that decides if this is the definitive console or not. Kirby - check next year. Mario (2D) - check. Mario (3D) - check. and there's probably a second one on the way too. Mario Kart - check. Mario Party - check next year. Paper Mario - nothing confirmed, but I'm unsure about this being considered a "major" franchise. Still, it could happen eventually. Metroid - not official, but Nintendo pretty much confirmed it's coming. If it's Retro behind it, it will definitely be good. Pikmin - check. Splatoon - kinda jumping the gun here, but I think this is the next big Nintendo IP. check next year. Star Fox - check next year. (and yeah some people think it will suck, but I think it will certainly be good, even if it fails to be great) Super Smash Bros. - check next week. Yoshi - check next year. Zelda - check next year.
I don't think a previous Nintendo console was this close to getting a full lineup of major first-party franchises. Metroid and Animal Crossing are definitely on the way, and apart from these the only really big IP left to make its mark on the system is F-Zero. I think this one is make or break for the system - if it makes it, the Wii U is certainly Nintendo's definitive machine, but if it remains in the dark we might have to wait until we can say that about one of their consoles.
So, what are your thoughts on this? Do you think the Wii U will become Nintendo's ultimate system or do you think it sucks more than the Virtual Boy?
