Forums - PC Discussion - Any ideas on a good laptop to buy?

Hi, I'm looking to buy a new laptop soon and I'm looking to spend around $1000 on it (preferably a little less). Will be used mostly for gaming and other media stuff. Anyone know any good ones?

I like the ASUS laptops that I've been looking at but I'd like to see what you guys have to recommend before I make my purchase final.

Hmm, well, If you are looking around $1000sh, then I suggest this one:

http://www.ncix.com/detail/asus-vivobook-s551ln-intel-core-68-97679.htm

It has an i7 + Nvidia 840M gpu + 24gb ssd for ur OS + 6gb of ram + 1TB HDD which should be good for gaming! The res is only 1366 x 768 but that only means that ur gpu has to work less and granted 1080p does generally look nicer but for $1000, its a fairly good deal imo.

Another one would be

http://www.ncix.com/detail/asus-k550jk-intel-core-i7-4710hq-47-103058-1269.htm

i7 + 850M + 750gb HDD + 8gb of ram which is pretty good since its about the same price as the first one, you lose ssd + 250gb but you gain better cpu, ram and gpu

Now, if you are willing to spend $200 more, then I suggest this one:

http://www.ncix.com/detail/asus-rog-g551jm-intel-core-de-102952-1269.htm

i7 + 860M + 8gb of ram + 1080p IPS display + red backlit keyboard + 750gb HDD! This one doesn't include a ssd interestingly enough but it does offer quite a nice experience with the superior keyboard and display as well as a better GPU

Does it have to be a laptop? I mean are you actively going to be using it on the go all the time or are you just looking for a 1 stop buy instead of getting a PC? lot more bang for your buck with a Desktop or Tower PC.

Why not check me out on youtube and help me on the way to 2k subs over at www.youtube.com/stormcloudlive

Well I will be using it for school too, but if it can play games it should be able to handle my school stuff.

Just want to drop in and say that Lenovo is offering a Y50 laptop with a i7 chip, 860m, backlit keyboard, and a hybrid HDD for just $1089, even cheaper if you are a student. I would check out the deal (looks like it's only until black friday)

I suggest ASUS laptop with Nvidia Geforce 850M GTX , i forget the one under multimedia type, even they have the gaming type on the same price ROG 550 something i forgot, just check on Google.

Lenovo also has a good deal, but if you want more on get to go, portability, less heat and longer battery life I suggest buy laptop with 850M GTX on it, it's not that powerful but better then 840M GT but still have a longer battery life then 860M GTX.

Surface Pro 3!!!!!!!!! It's going to struggle with good games...

But personally I've gone for desktop + laptop. More expensive, but much better in both ways. Of course it's up to you

You really need to say what size (and format) screen you're looking for. Choices always start from there.

Then you could say what games are you planning to play on it, wether you want an IPS screen, need a disc drive and so on.

You could also go for a small, light notebook for general laptopping and some light gaming, maybe something like a Yoga convertible or even a MacBook Air, and a PC for games. I would say to avoid Jizz's suggestions at all costs (sorry Jizz). Vance's suggestion is okay if that's what you want, but this is better: http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/yoga-series/yoga-14/

Does this count??

You either want something for gaming, or something for productivity. The two don't exactly go hand-in-hand.

I'd recommend the Surface Pro 3...if it wasn't for the 128GB/4GB RAM spec combo being exactly $999.99 and the Type Cover not bundled. You're a student, though, so you should be able to get that and the Type Cover for that price I stated earlier because Microsoft and student discounts.

For gaming? You have the stuff in the Windows Store (like Project Spark, and not much of note) and Steam (Civ V being a very notable example.)
You also have Osu! if you want to get into rhythm games.
