Forums - Sales Discussion - The usefullness of price cuts?

So the price cut of the X1 has failed to push it past PS4 ww according to VGC.  The X1 has seen two pricecuts.  The first $100 came with the removal of kinect but still failed to boost sales to compete against PS4.  (I call it price cut for the sake of argument since you could not buy a kinectless sku before).  Now with the $50 price cut of the X1 still failed to pass the PS4 ww even with a free game.

Will the pricecut  keep the X1 competitive after this week or will it fizzle out like the previous pricecut?

Also, will MS cut the price further to $300 to keep it competitive within the next few months?

Yeah. Price cuts dont work.

Deary me. Are you serious?

Long term? Microsoft has had crazy promotions pracically every month of the year. None of them has had a lasting effect, although this is definitely the best and most successful one they've done. But if they didn't outsell PS4 WW this week then it wont happen this year as the intial rush of the price drop would fade. Although there will be a natural christmas bump the PS4 gets that aswell.

There's only 2 races: White and 'Political Agenda'
2 Genders: Male and 'Political Agenda'
2 Hairstyles for female characters: Long and 'Political Agenda'
2 Sexualities: Straight and 'Political Agenda'

The fact that it failed to outsell PS4 worldwide isn't that relevant.. what's relevant is that its sales tripled.

People need to look outside this console war mentality where by you're either a winner or a looser. I don't think MS even think they can catch PS4 worldwide this gen (not with the EU already having their mind made up) but they wanna regain as much marketshare as they can. I think particularly in NA and UK, where the XO appeared to to double PS4's sales this week

If the Xbox sold an extra 15k and outsold the PS4 worldwide would that really change value of the pricecut? Only for bragging purposes but otherwise no, not really.

So a price cut only works if you become number 1 globally in your product space?

This is silly thinking.

Price cuts increase sales, temporarily or long term . Therefore they work. The end.

Not all pricecuts are of the same value though, some are certainly more effective then others. I remember the Vita's hardware barely responded to a price cut last year. Questioning the usefullness of a pricecut is fair, but I agree basing its value on whether or not it allowed a product to outsold its competitor is nonsensical.

As i've said many times, nothing stops this train. It is too late for X1.

Remember the Sega Genesis price cut? Probably not but in some cases they are used to get as many consoles into as many households as possible. In Sega's case, they dropped the price of the Genesis below the SNES and packaged it with Sonic. This obviously paid off for them in the long run. Price cuts have to be logically thought out.

Well, it got pretty damn close, although that includes CoD and some aggressive bundling.

Price cuts are simply intended to boost sales. Beating your competition is obviously the 'ultimate' target, but it's not a prerequisite for something to have been a success/worth it.

Price cuts do not increase sales they increase demand.
I know it sounds like a trivial difference, but its not.

Cut to price just for the holiday is a smart move, but I dont expect sony to follow suit.

The most recent $50 off price cut werent worldwide so it shouldnt have a worldwide effect on sales.

The effectivenes of this cut is yet to be seen. More people in the X1 ecosystem means their friends are more likely to buy an X1 at some point(not saying they will or will use X1 as their primary gaming source.)

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.
