Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony Looking To Include Microsoft’s DRM ‘PlayReady’ In PS4

For those of you who are unaware, PlayReady is a content protection solution from Microsoft. The technology enables encryption and Digital Rights Management. The technology was first launched by Microsoft in 2007 and is currently being used in several other services provided by the Redmond based company.

According to a job listing, Sony might be using the technology in all its platforms including the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. Sony are currently looking for a Principal Engineer that has specialization in PlayReady and implement it in multimedia applications across its three consoles.

Now we are not sure whether this technology will only be limited to multimedia such as music and video or whether it will make its way across digital games as well. Having said that, it’s no surprise that Sony may be borrowing technology from its competitor. Microsoft is best at software applications and Xbox is only a small part of their business.

Gawd, MS has their hands on everything now a days huh? They get money from Android, they get money from Apple and if Sony does this, they will probably get money from Sony. Its almost like, why bother winning when you can make money from the winners? Loll

Sony and MS do business all the time. Lets not get blinded by the fanboys wars.

Ugh, DRM.

We need DRM otherwise every Tom, Dick and Harry would be pirating. Knock on effect would be less money going into the music/film/game industry and would shrink it.

Imagine the game industry now but smaller? Small studios would go out of business, as if enough hasn't disapeared over the years, bigger studios would suffer and shrink and we would have less games and less budgets for games.

DRM is very important.

Because the PS4 was completely free of DRM before.

Exactly. People seem to think that the PS4 doesn't employ any DRM at all because Sony were against the DRM that MS wanted to use for the X1. There are different types of DRM that varies in restriction strictness. Not all DRM is bad.

I still don't know what it is ._.

All DRM is bad for pirates.

Huh. GG Microsoft. If Xbox beats PS4 this gen, $$$$, if it doesn't, $$$$ from Sony.

That's a master-plan I was not prepared to witness. :O
But let's see how it turns out. I'm a madboy.
