Forums - Gaming Discussion - PS4 vs XB1 Graphics Discrepancy Not As Big As Last Gen?

Which gen is the discrepancy greater

PS4 vs XB1 323 77.46%

PS3 vs 360 93 22.30%

Total:416

Pixels and numbers don't really relate to better graphics for me. I just dont notice it. I'm not surprised by the poll results though, people have made such a big fuss over resolution but its hardly noticable in screenshots or in motion. Most people are not gaming on a 50+ tv to notice anyways.

Last gen, the difference in textures, shadows, lighting etc was the real kicker. For me the difference is night and day bewteen most 360 games and ps3 games.

Yeah, just want to point out that anyone using Bayonetta as an example is going to lose some credibility.

And what about anyone who trys to use Ghost X1/PS4 or any of the other X1/PS4 early unoptimised games to try proving how big the difference is? do they lose credibility??.

Beats me, I don't know or care about CoD.  You'll have to fight your own battles.

CGI stop
Those people simply don't want to understand.
You can do this for years and they won't accept hard facts.

All they counter with is "My grandma has seen this and that and told me this"

Its the same with those people seeing someone buying a X1 and saying the tides are shifting.

How does one simply go about the conclusion that a game is unoptimized ?

Early in every consoles life, all engines are unoptimized.  None of these devs are familiar with targeting this level of hardware (because they've all been tailoring their games with last gen in mind, ergo, starting point is 16x less RAM, etc...).  Even most PC devs aren't really up to speed on properly working with 8 ACE's, since only AMD's Volcanic Island GPU's (R9 290+) have that amount.  It's not really financially intelligent to build your game around the feature set of a GPU that a very small percentage of the population has.  So yeah, every gen this happens.  First couple years devs refine their shit, middle years and on is where everything gets really ironed out.

At the same time, devs also need to tailor their engines to the esram efficiently.  So, the X1 should improve over time as well, the PS4 just has a good chunk more resources to pull from.

The PS3 was built strong but was tough for devs to develop on yielding second rate ports. Their exclusives told the story. This gen the perfomrance beating wont just be on an exclusive end but also on a multiplat end.

That's not all that is happening this gen.

In most multiplatform games that run at 1080p on PS4 and 900p on XOne the only difference is the resolution itself. In case of games running at the same resolution on both consoles, obviously XOne suffers a lot more since it's hardware is worse than PS4's, usually using lower end assets and having a worse framerate.

Nope. Other differences include higher resolution textures, smoother framerates, less (or no) screen tear, better AA, and better AO. With most multiplatform releases, one or more of those elements are different between the two machines. Just check out DF for clarification.

I've read a few faceoffs and, actually, you're right, I forgot about some compromises games usually do on XOne even when lowering res. Still, results depend a lot on the game. While in most cases XOne ports run with lower shadow resolutions and some absent or lower end post-processing, I've actually not read yet any faceoff in which texture resolution is lower on XOne when compared to PS4. There are cases where the XOne version actually has better framerates, though, so it highly depends on the game. Anyway, it's still not noticeable to the extent that was present last-gen, since texture/post-processing/shadow resolution settings were so low that any drop to these was a lot more perceptible than it is this gen. I do get your point, though.

And two others made reference to it afterwards as though they took it seriously.  My comment was to stop that.

Trust me, I would have no problem quoting you if it was only intended for you.

I thought ";)" was sufficient to denote that I was joking around.

Not when it's used by curl-6

Hmmmm, maybe I need to be more obvious...

You were obvious enough. But last time I took your ";)" as a joke ended me up getting banned for 3 days haha.

I don't recall this incident, what happened?

It is a MASSIVELY bigger difference. Not to mention the PS3 and 360 traded blows depending on the game (Although PS3 exclusives sh!t all over every other game on either system.)

This happened:

It was a misunderstanding from both sides but a ";)" doesn't indicate much really.

Ah that. My memory doesn't stretch back that far haha.

I guess I figured it was so universally known that Bayo on PS3 was an atrocious port that people would know I was being silly.
