The Wii. I can see the PS4 trundling past the Wii in the long run, but i don't think it has a chance in hell of getting to 50m faster than it did. I'm surprised it's managed to stay ahead for this long, especially given the current state of Japan's home console market.

Funny but people dont see that PS4 is matching wii with out Japan.

Im betteing on Japan to help PS4 achive that 50m, slowpoke sales will change with some games.  DQ hack an slash will start the climb, MGS FF and others will continue it.  While Sony them selves have shown Asia sales are out pacing PS2, and we all can see what PS4 is doing in Europe.

Yeah what PS4 will do in Japan next year will be interesting. If it picks up steam in Japan it would outship Wii for this race. Though who knows how Japan will react.

I am guessing Wii, but wouldn't be surprised either way.

Well, Wii had a lot of filthy casual costumers! I hope PS4 reaches, 1 billion consoles in 2015, i think they can.

Will depend on games of course.  Hopefully no major delays.

Wouldnt hurt for GT7 to arrive before march 2016.

I expect Wii to win in the early race but in the long run PS4 will beat Wii.

PS4 YTD
2014: 20M
2015: ~35M, at best close to 40M
March 2016: at best 43M so Wii will have a lead of 7m at least. It will only grow, till 2017 when relatively the Wii hype stops.

However this is under the assumption that PS4 will never have 20M sales in a single year. If they do hit 20M then PS4 will easily keep up with Wii.

While the PS4 is selling very well, I believe that the Wii will win because the PS4 is currently not selling as fast as the Wii did last gen.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the PS4.

1. China. While sales and shipments will be light for the first quarter or two I can see it having a positive effect (i.e. picking up the Japanese slack)

2. Japan. If the PS4 can keep up the game release pace of Q1 throughout the year

3. Expanded emerging markets. Sony has a better distribution network than Nintendo.

4. Price. Potential of a $299 price in the next two years

5. Games. The system has a game a week starting next year with some very high profile games hitting the system.

If it does not achieve it, the margin will be respectable for a $400 console (within 10-20% or 42-46 million)

I voted Wii but I think the PS4 has a chance to pull it off. Depending on how it does in China and if it can pick up sales in Japan. It will be a close race!!!!

PS4, because...

- It will absorbe a huge bunch of the gaming community that won't buy a WiiU or Xbox One, but bought a Wii and/or X360 back then.
- 8 gen still had to fight with 7 gen systems in 2014, anywhere close to what 7 gen had to battle in 2007 with 6th gen systems, and still PS4 sold the same or more than Wii in its first year.
- Most games right now are cross-gen, so most people still didn't have a real reason to jump in the next gen, but they'll have in 2015 and 2016.
- Because 2014 has been one of the worst years in gaming quality in my opinion, but it will be followed by one of their best
- and last but not least, because PS4 has been proving naysayers everytime they're wrong, because suddenly, the company that manufactured 160m consoles with ps2, now can't produce 20-25 mill in a year with ps4....pssst.

what was the highest ever PS2 shipment year?

you wont know.

so I'll tell you.  22.5m

I knew perfectly, thanks to you for sound like a smartass....

That proves what??, that if Sony produced 22'5 in 02-03, a number that was way higher than anything seen before. Why Sony can't surpass that number when with PS4 has already did it comparing to PS2 launch numbers???

This proves my point more than it prove yours

Well good thing then that the PS4 is outpacing the PS2 in many markets.

Wii. Everyone and their grandma wanted a Wii, grandmas don't want a PS4.
