Also, thread title is the title of the video. If it's still too inflamitory, I can change it.

A Youtube person I frequently watch, ADoseOfBuckley, posted a video about Nintendo's tendency to "dumb down" titles and games for theiraudience and discussed why he gets frusterated in their marketing and choices. I half-agree with his points and he has a lot to say (mixed with lots of vulgar language, so warning), but I was curious what you guys thought

They've run out of ideas for game and console names. They should just go back to numbering stuff like with Mario Kart 7.

"On my business card I am a corporate president. In my mind I am a game developer. But in my heart I am a gamer." - Satoru Iwata

A bit harsh. didn't finish it, so if he acknowledges it later then I missed it. I got to the part with him shoving the 3ds game in the toaster. I honestly don't think he gets that Nintendo has always marketed to specifically young kids and their parents that likely aren't gamers. So it's not that Nintendo thinks their fans are stupid, especially the older ones, it's that they know without a doubt that their target audience is often young and impressionable and ignorant.

I mean its like reading a children's book and getting pissed thinking the book/author/publisher is treating *you* like a moron. Guess what it's not meant for you. I'm sorry but if the guy can't see that then he really is a moron. Nintendo games especially the core franchises are meant for families, more specifically young kids.

Nintendo doesn't do that with every game tho, just the ones again targeted for kids, which this guy is bitching about. They have games like Bayonetta and ZombieU targeted for mature audiences, and guess what those games don't treat their users like idiots or ignorant kids like the core franchises do. If ya ask me this guy is a bit of a wet noodle and may have a head injury.

All Hail the Jester King. The King is back, and I am still a dirty girl prof ;)

I mean Wii U could have been: Wii 2, Super Wii, Wii Ultimate, Nintendo 8 or Nintendo Infinity as it is an 8th Gen video game console. Anything but Wii U! But we can't go back in time, but still they jacked up potential names. They could have called it Super Smash Bros. 4 3DS, or SSB4 Wii U because, I don't know..., it's the FOURTH smash game!? Mario Kart 8, they even showed the loop in the game reveal, call it infinity or something... nobody wants to use INFINITY, not even Xbox, heck there's an Xfinity ad at the bottom of the page. The Gamecube was at least different.

Also, they do dumb down a lot of things but they try to remedy that after the main games are completed. I hope the new Zelda can break that cycle and hopefully the NonNintendo (9th gen system) makes Nintendo remember the importance of naming conventions.

Big Mac for Mouth made me chuckle, but when it comes to video games, some people are quote unquote "morons". Especially with Nintendo in that parents are the ones often making the purchasing decision. If you're a hardcore player, sure you know all this stuff and it doesn't have to be explained to you.

But if you're a 50 year old mom who last played video games in any extended fashion with Pac-Man in 1981, well yeah you might be confused as to what a Wii U is versus a Wii and what a 3DS is versus a DS or which Smash Brothers your kid wants.

Also to be honest I think SMB2 Japan wasn't released in North America because NOA (and IMO rightly so) saw that it was basically just a rehash of SMB1. There are plenty of NES games from Nintendo that are harder than SMB2 Japan.

And the level skip feature isn't all that bad either IMO ... yes the point of the game is to play the levels, but say you are a novice gamer and simply can't beat one of the levels. Should you not be able to play the rest of the game because of that? To be honest this has happened to me in the new DK: Tropical Freeze game, which is fairly freaking hard. I reached one of the bosses and it's just too much of a headache to beat him so I've never finished the game. Maybe I'll go back to it later, but maybe not.

Besides is Super Smash Bros. for Wii U really that different from Super Smash Bros. U? You can call it the latter if you want.

Some parents are stupid too and some retail staff are dumb as bricks too.

I can totally see this happening

Kid: I want Smash Brothers for my Wii U!

Parent: OK dear.

(goes to store)

Parent: I need Smash Brothers something or other.

Clerk: Yup, we have it here. There's one for $39.99 and the other one for $59.99.

Parent: Oh I'll take the cheaper one.

And voila now the kid has Smash Bros. for 3DS instead of Wii U.

I was sort of going to agree, but I thought all the examples Buckley uses in this video were pretty stupid. Nothing all that bad about "for 3DS" or "for WiiU", especially after I think each of those consoles have had branding problems amongst the non-gamer populace. I think there's nothing too bad about giving players the option to bypass particularly tricky sections of a game, though I do kinda hate it in some ways and won't use it. ANd western SMB2 was better than Japanese SMB2 anyways. (;

Having worked at a Toys R' Us I can tell you in general consumers (especially parents) are relatively "stupid" when it comes to video games.

I remember one time we had a parent throw a fit that they bought a Playstation console as a gift but no one in the store told her that you basically need a memory card to save your game so she came back and made a huge stink about no one telling her that.

Parents accidentally buying the wrong version of a game also happens allllllllllll the time. I had many instances where a parent was buying a PS2 game thinking it would work on the PS1 for example and I saved about 3-4 parents the headche of finding out the hard way by just clarifiying with them which system they have at home but a lot of store clerks don't care to do that.

Thats exactly the point of the video because calling a 3DS game "for 3DS" is equally stupid.

But who cares about that.. nintendo have much bigger problems than how they should be naming their games.

No, as in I thought Buckley's arguments were stupid. Their game names work fine enough.
Can't debate the second point!
