Ninja Theory can recoup Hellblade budget with 300,000 sales

Ninja Theory's Hellblade will need to sell only 300,000 units to recoup its development budget.

After releasing a string of AAA console titles to varying levels of commercial success, the UK-based studio is attempting to establish what it describes as a "third way" of making games - one that falls somewhere between what we have traditionally called AAA and Indie. Smaller scale, lower cost, with no sacrifices made in terms of creative risks and quality of execution.

"We're taking our work on Hellblade as an opportunity to question the way the games industry has always done things," said product development manager Dominic Matthews in a recent developer diary. "To see if there's a better way, a more streamlined way. To create amazing quality on a smaller budget."

As a result, Hellblade has a core team of 12 people, with a single person working in the majority of discipline areas related to game production. Ninja Theory is committed to finding affordable or homebrew alternatives to the high-end processes associated with its previous games - the performance capture used in Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, for example - but it's sales target will remain eminently achievable: between 200,000 and 300,000 units.

"[Hellblade] is about what we feel passionate about, what we're good at, and what we think our fans and supporters want from a game," said Tameem Antoniades, Ninja Theory's co-founder. "But it comes at a price. We have to self-fund this game, and we have to work within the restrictions that that means for us."

Great news, and the game looks very interesting, they should clear that hurdle on PS4 with room to spare.
Hopefully some other studios can learn something from this example (but of course - talent is required)

Perfectly doable. PS fans like Ninja Theory a lot, and even DriveClub did that first week with average reviews.



Just because you have an opinion doesn't mean you are necessarily right.

this is what it should be like. Studios should start downsizing. This reminds me of days of old when all a studio had to do to be profitable was sell a million copies of their game. Now if they don't sell at least 4M/5M then they haven't even started scratching the surface.

They aren't "establishing" anything. Believe it or not, there was a time when AAA games weren't as common and we got tons of fun "AA" or "B tier" titles. Rare games, Turok, old Mortal Kombats, Musou games, virtually every non FF JRPG, puzzle games, beat em ups, etc. Back when games were just fun, dudebros got the f*ck out of the gaming, and marketing was at an all time low. We refer to this as the golden age of gaming.

A studio working within a reasonable budget? Say it ain't so. I wish them success, like what happened with payday 2, maybe then the rest of the industry will take notice and start taking some risks rather than playing it safe the way they have for the past several years.



Loved heavenly Sword, so looks like this one's for me. Rather ironic that their PS3 early gen exclusive actually sold fairly well, but did not make a return, whereas this early gen PS4 game is likely to break even within a month, possibly in its first week.

That's how everyone in the business should think and I'm sure the sales and money will follow.



But will they reach it? If not, then the gaming industry might be doomed after all.
