Forums - Gaming Discussion - Resolution doesn't sell games, says Far Cry 4 dev - 1080p debate is a "weird echo chamber"

Yet he's making a sequel that appears as though it could have sufficed as an expansion pack.

pff wanna bet far cry is the same old shit, I'll take a good game with great graphics over a good game with shit graphics any day

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

Ubisoft has gotten too stupid lately. They keep saying the same thing.

I think what happens is people keep asking about resolution, Ubisoft keeps giving their usual response, and the internet goes crazy about it again and again.

All a company has to say is resolution doesn't really matter and the internet goes into a panic.

Less pixels means more resources for graphics and performance. Eventually that's a sacrifice developers will make. The Order 1886 is sacrificing part of the screen for improved graphics.

The same as Peter Jackson sacrificed part of the screen to save on film stock? The extra visible geometry mostly cancels out the gains from fewer pixels. Done correctly you render 35% more screen space (slightly zoomed out expanded to the sides) with 74% of the pixels. Unless you're the evil within and don't increase the fov while going widescreen :/

From my experience, adjusting FOV in PC games hasn't had much impact on performance. Adjusting resolution certainly does.

Anyhow, the developers of The Order already said they are going to use to the black bars for more visual polish. Hence, lower resolution for better graphics.

Personally, I'd prefer no black bars in a shooter.

Resolution can be likened to a one-way door.

Resolution won't sell games on the basis of resolution alone; they have to be games that merit playing/buying in the first place. This is obvious.

Resolution/performance, however, can kill sales. It matters to some buyers when the performance of a game they were originally interested in buying does not perform up to expectations. This includes resolution.

In short, resolution won't help games sell, but it can unquestionably hurt sales when consumer perception dictates it.

The issue isn't resolution. Resolution was promised to gamers by both Sony and Microsoft. It was a lie. A bar they set to high to oversell their consoles. Now, they're trying to tell us resolution no longer matters when gamers were never concerned about resolution to begin with.

never concered about resolution?  Ever since Sony gloated about "True HD" and 1080p, the Sony fanboys have just went nuts.  But its not like the resoulation talk was never talked about prior to this gen.

It was. It's just gone from a footnote to becoming a monster and even having a name in "resolutiongate!"

It's sending a bad message to the devs, IMO.

I'm a Santos Team fans but if I'm inside the Corinthians part of the fans watching a game between Santos and Corintians... I will cheers for the Corintians for sure

Rockstar devs give a interview for a PS fan magazine and they said 1080p is a must...

PS4 can do 1080p. Xbox One can't in many cases.
That's what the debate is about. It's about people downplaying PS4s power advantage by saying it doesn't matter, which it clearly does as it leads to better resolution and framerate.

Whether you can notice the difference doesn't matter. People like buying the more powerful console especially if its also the most popular. This resolution difference made a lot more sense when XB1 was $500 and PS4 was $400. You were basically paying a lot more for an technically inferior product.

I don't know why the debates are still going on though. 1080p > 720p. PS4 > Xbox One. These are facts that aren't going to ever change.
