There has been a lot of negativity surrounding Nintendo's decision to release Smash Bros. on the 3DS alongside the Wii U, as well as releasing the 3DS version much earlier. But was it the right move after all?

Based on the latest Nintendo Direct, Smash Bros. Wii U is a much meatier game with features and game modes not present on the 3DS, most notably an 8 player mode.

Nintendo has managed to stir up interest in the 3DS userbase, which eclipses that of the Wii U, only to deliver a much superior version on the Wii U.

There is no doubt that Smash Bros. Wii U will be an excellent game, possibly the best in the series and GOTY, but will this translate into sales?

How many VGchartz users will be picking up a Wii U for Smash Bros.?

Yes of course, anybody would of just got the wiiu version instead of the 3ds version. 3ds version is great, just WiiU version is beyond Greatness :0

not really

smash 3ds is already obsolete

Yeah, Im trading in my 3DS copy and will get the WiiU version. It was a smart move by Nintendo. It got me to buy it...

The proper method would have been to release another big game for 3DS to take Smash's spot in the release schedule and launch both versions simultaneously. 3DS version sales would be lower but you know what you're getting with no short term temptation involved.

I still might have bough both because I've already enjoyed Smash 3DS in some locations that I would not be able to have a WiiU.

I think their main goal of the smash bros 3ds was to get people to buy the wiiU version... Plus, the 3ds version costs $40 and the wiiU version costs $60 so for $20 more, you get additional content which makes sense to me loll

And I will be getting the wiiU version and I already have the 3ds version which I will keep

Their main goal was to sell the game twice. Remember, Nintendo got themselves into a situation where milking existing customers is the only viable option until the next generation handheld and home console come out.

True...hence the New 3DS.

I didn't think there was any way in hell that I would buy both the 3DS and Wii U versions, yet here I am minutes after watching the direct and I'm completely ready to shell out the cash. 8 Player Smash is going to make for some insane parties! Can't wait to have friends over during the holidays

run away!

Smash 4 looks fun and all but its definitely not a GOTY contender.
