Forums - Sales Discussion - Your reasons for the PS4 winning this generation despite being the most powerful console.

Can't speak for anyone else, but this is why I made the jump instead of going with a WiiU and/or XBone.

#1.) Sony has shown over the course of almost 2 decades that they support their consoles, new or old. They do not release a new console and just leave the old one to die. This has built a ton of confidence with me for Sony and their home consoles. Whether this is due to 1st party efforts or strong 3rd party relations matter not to me. All I know is that PS4 has been here for a year and my PS3 is still seeing new exclusive releases, thus causing it to still be used almost daily in my home. It is still relevant.

#2.) Treat me with respect. Say what you want and try to claim whatever, but Sony stood against DRM. People want to be able to sell their games. People want a sense of ownership. Instead of going where some 3rd parties and MS wanted to take the industry Sony chose to stand on the side of consumers, regardless of what you may or may not think was the reason. Only thing that matters is what their choice ultimately was.

#3.) Most diverse lineup of games. No other home consoles has the range of title like Playstation. You have full JPN support, full western support, etc... There is basically no developer who refuses to create games for Playstation. This allows me the confidence to know that if something looks interesting, there is a very high probability of it coming my way.

#4.) Best bang for my buck. Lowest price, highest power, most games. What more do you want?

Came here to say all this, thanks for saving me the trouble.

The 'most powerful system never wins' was always kind of a stupid "rule" that some people got too carried away with. Almost always there were other aspects at play there.

The SNES did beat the Genesis and Turbo Grafx 16 too, and it was more powerful than either.

The N64 would have beat the Playstation had Nintendo not been stupid and crippled the console with cartridge only.

It's not a rule.  it's history.  The weakest doesn't always lose but the strongest never wins.....until now.  What we fail to mention is that, historically, the strongest always arrived too late or at way too high of a price port with miniscule support.  The PS4 somehow managed to avoid evey mistake and clock in at $399.

*edit* while the Super Nintendo beat the Genesis and TG-16, there were also more powerful 4th gen consoles....

Marketing message and price for both the Xbox1 and PS4 during launch are the biggest reason point blank.
Except for early adopters (Hardcore) no one cares about specs. Casual gamers only care about games, enjoyment, and price.

Say what you want about the Wii last gen, but I played the crap out of Wii sports (bowling) for a a very long time. the best game for the Wii for me was the game it was packed with. I believe it was fine tuned so well it convinced people that motion controls were legit. Sure, it was the weakest system, but had the most innovative feature out of the box, with the lowest price. that's a recipe for success. there were stories that nursing homes were buying them to use as exercise for the elderly. That is some serious market penetration.

PS4 came in at a lower price, listened to reactions MS received about policies, and did the opposite. Sony did an excellent job marketing the PS4, a complete 180 from the PS3 launch. I commend and applaud them for it. If MS sold the Xbox1 with kinect for the same price at launch, I believe this generation sales would be alot closer between the 2.

It's amazing how well the PS4 has sold, I can't put my finger on it - sales just snowballed (reminds me when the Wii was launched) - I am still waiting for a reason to buy one - I thought DriveClub would be the reason but that didn't work out, guess I will have to wait to see how UC4 turns out

This is kind of a cop out arguement, the main 16-bit consoles were the Genesis, TG-16, and Super NES. Just because some half-assed $700 machine from 3D0 came out two-three years later doesn't make the SNES the most powerful console of that cycle, it would be like saying well the PS4 isn't the most powerful if/when Steambox eventually releases.

With Jak & Daxter on PS4 then Sony is always the king of hill.

Consumers hate good graphics. So when they heard that PS4 wouldn't have a dedicated graphics card and instead a lousy APU they instantly rushed to it. And as to why PS4 is above X1 in sales, they simply were the first to announce their console.

Nobody is getting a Wii U because all of its games look AMAZING!

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

The Thing is that back in the days there was always a console that was totally overpowered,
. Like the Neo Geo, the Original Xbox and so on. All that power raised the Price dramatically resulting in low Sales. Too much power was Never a Reason for Conalles to fail. It was always the Price. In this Generation, the PS4 is the strongest console, but there isn't a competitor with crazy Specs, unless you count steam boxes which still haven't Released yet. But for what it is, the PS4 isn't all that powerful which enables a relatively low Price Tag.

Official member of VGC's Nintendo family, approved by the one and only RolStoppable. I feel honored.

(i) Sony's support for the PS3 in 2011 - 2013 compared to MS for 360 & Ninty with the Wii was unmatched. Not to mention the MS PR & TLoU dropping right before PS4 launch. It got a lot of praise + GoTY awards & gave gamers great faith in Sony to support their console. Ni Nu Kuni, GT6, GoW: Acension, Puppeteer, Beyond all launched for the PS3 in 13' too, that's as good of a year as it gets. I remember playing FF12 & GoW2 around the early years of the PS3 life. Longevity of the console is one great reason I'm going to stick with the PS brand for the foreseeable future.

(ii) Cheaper then the XOne, albeit the WiiU is cheaper then both but lacks third party games.

(iii) Multiplatform, one year lead & online advantages are nullified this time around.
