All I can say is I and my family don't buy either. The only video discs I've bought in three-four years are a small handful of the Ghibli Blu-ray editions.

*Perhaps I should note that when we do keep up our Netflix physical subscription we rent blu-rays, of course.

I bought all the Ghibli ones Disney bothered to release in NA. I imported Mononoke from Hong Kong, lost patience waiting for the Disney release. Spirited away is coming out in Europe in 4 weeks on blu-ray, here no release date. Mononoke and Kiki's delivery service are finally coming in November over here, yet Porco rosso, which has been out for a year in Europe, still no release date.

Yeah, I have no love for Disney's decisions in the release schedule of these BD editions. To be honest, I also like the new case covers less. I gave up on Spirited Away and just settled on the DVD to put it with th rest. So I'm probably not even bothering with the BD for that one.

Fun fact. I just bought a Blu Ray drive for my PC today, plan on getting a few Blu Ray collections and films in the future.

I predict that the Wii U will sell a total of 18 million units in its lifetime.

The NX will be a 900p machine

I buy blu ray, but only when I really like the movie. I'm not going to buy something I won't watch more than once.

Indeed

Hong Kong / International edition:

Europe:

NA:

It's the same as the DVD cover.

Too bad imports are so expensive, $80 for the Japan version, $40 for Hong Kong edition  (which doesn't have the English soundtrack, fine for me, but my kids can't read yet)

"Digital purchase" is kind of an oxymoron anyway, people don't want to purchase movies digitally (or physically) in most cases ... streaming a movie from Netflix or "renting" a new release from their cable provider is what they want, not to purchase a "digital copy" of a movie for $20 or whatever.

Indeed. It's the physical rental market that has practically disappeared. And it has also taken part of the movie sales market with it. I never see figures how many people actually purchase digital movies to own. Apparently the movie industry has been catching on to this fact as well as they now hold new releases hostage for a few weeks, digital sales first, then rentals and blu-ray release. Ofcourse pirates still get it first and without regional or other restrictions.

What? Is Blue Ray still a thing? XD

It's interesting to watch companies brainwash average people into thinking that physical media is dead when in fact, it still outsells physical and in some cases, by a large margin. For instance, for every 10 books sold, 7 of them are physical. Physical music? That medium that's been "dead" for like a decade now? They still make up about 50% of the market when to comes to full album purchases. Games? Again, not even close. DVD's and Blu-Ray's FAR outsell digital purchases as well.

Really, the only reason people tend to snicker about physical media being gone is because of marketing. And WHY do they market digital purchases as the here and now sort of thing? Because they want to kill second hand sales... period.

Wow, so I'm both average and brainwashed. Quick to jump to conclusions, aren't you?

It should've been a better joke, with DVD being more important instead of digital. Still, your reaction, lol.

I don't know, but it's time to start trying new stuff!

When will you come HVD?

Still too expensive will probably show up eventually but it looks like the Holographic Versatile Card will never see the market.

I'm pretty sure here in the US Blu ray is the majority of of the market. But it will never be as successful as DVD was as its peak thanks to streaming sites, on demand and digital sales.

Agreed about DVD being the peak. I think with the X1 going blu ray it will help the market get a nice bump.

I think most people that have X1 already have had a Blu-ray player before they got a X1.  I had a Blu-ray player before I got a PS3.  Doubt my Blu-ray collection will ever get as big as my DVD collection got over 300 DVD's and only around 50 Blu-ray's.

With 4K Blu-Ray's coming, it's marketshare will only rise.

how many layer discs will they need for 4k? I'd imagine they'd need 200Gigs. The availability of multi layer blu rays will only be good for consoles.

The plan is to use 82mbps 50GB, 108mbps 66GB and 128mbps 100GB discs with h.265 encoding, 10 bit REC.2020 color (you need a new tv to take advantage of the wider color gamut), upto 60fps, they'll be coming out late 2015.

I'm looking forward to upgrading to a 4K projector. The sharpness of a 46" tv at 4x the size. Improved color and range as well, sounds good.

Blu-ray marketshare is healthy, although the physical market is shrinking as well as all movie sales and rental revenue combined.

I've bought 58 blu-rays this year already, spend about $17 average on them. Picture, sound quality and extras, digital doesn't come close. Not that I have a choice with my shitty internet. It's been acting up again, I've been trying to download Plants vs Zombies Garden warfare for the past 3 days. Still stuck at 58%.

Thanks for the repply, very informative. Yeah I buy blu rays myself and my family rents them but I just don't watch films that much. SPend nearly all free time gaming so my Blu Ray collection is only around 15 films. Plan on updating it with about 10 of my fav movies though.

Actually.. In the first half of 2014 Total Digital spending ...

"Spending" means something entirely different than "full digital downloads of movies outnumber physical movie purchases." The words "revenue" and "spending" have been used by companies like EA to trick consumers into thinking digital is doing better than it is. They hardly EVER mention a direct comparison between full digital game purchases and physical game purchases because if they did, it makes digital look bad. So what do they do? In the case of movies, they add rentals and other things into their report. For games? They add DLC. For music? They add in the purchasing of single songs. It's all just a way to spin the numbers and make digital seem like it's in the majority... when it's not even close. Not when you compare apples to apples.
