Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why is there so much cynicism and negativity in the gaming community?

I have to ask why. I understand that games like Titanfall,Watch Dogs, and Destiny weren't as good as they could of been. No one's denying that. But the internet gaming community treats these games like they are utter garbage when thats definitely not the case. Theres been many games in the past year thats been getting this treatment. So that makes me ask why the overwhelming negativity?

Because you're on the Internet. Everything is mired in cynicism and negativity on the Internet.

Expectations, Media HYPE, lies, PR, bad information, downgrades, online servers not working properly, DLC and lack of content.

on the internet the person who screams the loudest receives the most attention - and those often are people with extreme opinions

Gamers know what they want individually so they are very precise and vocal about it, but they are so scattered in what they want as a group that when developers try to balance satisfying everyone while maintaining a profit, it gets messy very quickly.

Well... Maybe if the publishers didn't over hype and in certain cases, lie to us, then maybe, our expectations wouldnt be off the charts...

Like, if you look at Nintendo for example, with all their games, they show gameplay running on the console and they show extensive amounts of gameplay so that by the time it comes out, you know exactly what you are getting vs say Ubisoft with their watch_dogs downgrade was like, you set our expectations to a very high level and then you couldn't deliver so of course the game will be disappointing to us no matter what. Sure, the game itself may still be fun and the graphics still may look great but it still doesnt look as great as what you set our expectations to

So, overall, I think its mostly well deserved cause companies need to learn a lesson which they refuse to do

I mean, if a lot of gamers aren't happy with their game, then they clearly have the right to complain cause at the end of the day, we spent the money to buy these games and we worked hard for our money but they clearly goofed on their part and delivered us an experience which was different to what we perceived to be true. So, if thats the case, its their fault for not providing us with enough information to show us how the game really is...

Hence why, if you look at the big games released in 2014, there has hardly been any complaints about Nintendo games and they were more so praised by the players and reviewers because Nintendo showed us exactly what to expect vs other companys that goofed somewhere along the line

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

On one side of it people are just overdramatic and give in to hype, then exaggerate when their expectations aren't met.

But on the more reasonable side of things, a lot of people come from a time when games were just games, and everything that's become standard in gaming over the last few years has, to many, compromised the medium. When it was just about a company selling a game and us buying the game and that being the end of the transaction, that was gaming at its purest. Now that unfinished games, DLC, online issues, corporate PR bullshit and these levels of overhype and fanaticism are the norm, a lot of people hold a lot of spite. The people whom it bothers the most just leave, but those who stay because they still love gaming and want to enjoy it as much as they can (myself included) are often outspoken about the industry's problems, stuck in a limbo of tolerating yet hating what the medium has become.

tl:dr -- The internet.

That is your answer. Outside of the Internet I've heard nothing but positive responses for both Titanfall & Destiny. Watch Dogs got a bit of negativity but still.

Basically, the Internet in general is filled with people who like to rip on things just to hate. The Youtube comments are the absolute worst. You see it on VGC all the time, people hate on things they haven't even played just to defend their console / game of choice. VGC isn't too bad but it's still here, just far worse on other sites.

It happens with games, music, movies...everything. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean you have to rip it down. Is it being there really causing people harm? No but whatever

Nah the real problem is,the demographic publishers like ubisoft,EA and Activision try to reach is not the same demographic that is the majority of gamming communities like VGcharts,NeoGaf and /v/

If i had to describe the main demographic of this communities i would say:

18 - 35 male hardcore gamer that prefers singleplayer oriented games than multiplayer. They don't hate multiplayer though, they just see it as a secondary mode you play after finish the story. They want games to be better,to do different things and, mostly, to have a lot of content.

This is basically everything EA,Activision and ubisoft don't do these days.

They focus on multiplayer or DLC or both. They keep pushing the same game over and over and over until you start to hate that franchise that one day you loved.

1) Who exactly set the expectations so high? You can't blame the developers / publishers for marketing the game. That's their job, to get people to want their product. Just because you (not literally you) had super high expectations, doesn't mean you can blame the people who made it.

2) or it's the consumers fault for not researching the game before buying (or preordering) it. The Wiki page shows exactly what to expect from gameplay to story...if you didn't look it up, that's on you. They did provide the information, you just failed to look at it.

*Again, when I say you, I don't mean literally
