Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft ditching the Nokia name on smartphones

The Nokia Lumia name will soon become Microsoft Lumia

Related Stories

Microsoft is ditching the Nokia brand name from new devices, less than a year after acquiring the Finnish mobile firm.

New Nokia Lumia smartphones will instead by known as Microsoft Lumia, the company said.

Nokia's non-mobile division, which is not owned by Microsoft, will continue to use the name.

The mobile operation was bought by Microsoft in April in a deal worth $7.2bn (£4.6bn).

Since then, Microsoft has quietly shifted away from the Nokia brand.

A post on Nokia France's Facebook page confirmed the branding shift. The renaming will roll out globally in due course, Microsoft has said.

The announcement comes despite Microsoft agreeing to a 10-year deal to use the Nokia name on mobile products.

Microsoft is currently having a big shake-up. In July, chief executive Satya Nadella announced the cutting of 18,000 jobs.

The bulk of the cuts, around 12,500, will be from staff taken on after the Nokia acquisition.

Strange, Microsoft is going to be just like Apple.

Seems strange to get rid of the entire brand. Nokia is still a strong brand name in the developing world so I'm not sure why they want to get rid of it.

Because Microsoft > Nokia by far

Pretty strange to buy Nokia and then get rid of the name

They did not buy Nokia... But one division of it.

And if I'm not mistaken, part of the deal was to be able to use the "Nokia" name for a certain amount of time only.

So this is perfectly expected :)

Not in terms of phone brand recognition. Most people don't even know MS makes phones or even has an phone operating system. And in developing countries, the old Nokia phones still sell a huge amount.

This. Nokia's brand is massively recognizeable when it comes to phones, seems wasteful for Microsoft to have spent so much on the brand only to ditch it.

Microsoft did NOT buy the Nokia brand... Just the phone division.

Also Microsoft can use the Nokia name for 18 to 30 months only, so again, it is just normal and expected.

Why did Nokia even sell out anyways? They were making millions back in the day.
