Will the console market shrink or just die off?

SHRINK! 72 90.00%

DIE! 8 10.00%

Total:80

As some of you have heard this generation of consoles most likely won't out do it's predeccssors, and i've heard some say this might be the last generation of dedicated gaming consoles.

I myself honestly think that the console industry is going to have to shrink or it will go under, in otherwords i think the industry is going to a have to go back to say a 5th generation or 6th generation sized market to stay profitable. This just my own idea, which i'm sure i'm not the first to have it but just thought i'd share it.

I think it's going to have to change. Gaming has always evolved so as long as it isn't just a remake of the 7th gen, things should be fine. If things get boring and there's a lack of innovation, expect gamers to move on to the next big thing.

There are huge changes on the horizon for next-gen, assuming console makers want to stay relevant and appease their stock-holders.

Its clearly going to shrink if only for the casual Wii owner fad. Id wager to say 80% of Wii owners are not going to own a console and switch to smartphone gaming.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

At some point all console manufacturers will go software only or give up. I guess the game console industry is dead then?

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

So much this. The industry will change; not go under. This is what I've been chanting for years in here now.

Thanks for sharing this idea 6 years late, and fyi, this idea has been proven 6 years wrong.

If you are trying to say mobile is going to overtake consoles.

I don't see myself gaming on my Iphone until Iphone like.... 10 by the speed they are upgrading the phones. For one thing, touchscreen gaming feels awkward and retarded.

If you are trying to say PC is going to overtake consoles.

You must have been living in a cave for the past 15 years plus.

It's going to shrink for a while but can be revived. There just needs to be some innovation. I can remember kids in my neighborhood being done with consoles after our Colecos and Ataris broke with crappy joysticks. Then the NES came. The slick new d-pad based controllers and SMB were amazing. Since then we've seen lots of fun and fresh things come along like 3D, discs, analogue controllers, online gaming, Wii, and HD. This gen is a bit stale because it's just basically a power upgrade gen, not unlike the PS2 gen. At the same time we're seeing new devices like tablets that seem fresh and new. But tablets will be boring in time and people will want new experiences. If when this happens a company launches a new system that offers a fresh experience in controls, graphics, gameplay or combination of many things, it could be a smash success and expand the audience again.
