Forums - Sales Discussion - What % of the UK and US games market does Amazon account for? (roughly)

Anyone have any idea?

around 1%

below Germany %marketshare and above us % marketshare i suspect

us was 6% 2 years ago

UK it probably going to be different to the US, I'd guess. As in the US, Amazon is the online retailer while here in the UK there are a number of competitive alternatives... right?

GAME I think is still the biggest games retailer in the UK with about 30%. The issue is, I can't find any games only market share values, just Entertainment. Amazon wins there and HMV is coming back to 2nd place, GAME (in this article below) make up 7% of entertainment market share yet it's pretty much games only. http://www.kantarworldpanel.com/en/Press-Releases/Latest-entertainment-retailer-market-share

The only article I found with any amazon market share in games only was from 2012 around the time GAME and HMV were bankrupt and it mentions 9%. I'd say it's less than that now, with retailers like Tesco and Asda always in competition, GAME back from the brink and online retailers like Shopto.net taking over from the once strong Play.com

Hmm, pie.

Only problem here is the ambiguous use of the word "entertainment".  It may not be just gaming.

You are right, entertainment means everything, music and movies as well. The article I posted was more recent (from August) and shows HMV who pretty much have a dead games section coming back to second place.

GAME is still the biggest with 30% plus.

Hmm, pie.

Nah, I remember the number from a Neogaf thread some years ago..Thought from 2012 but must be older...

I saw something on the big GAF September 2014 NPD Thread the other day about it (US Only though). I saved it on a text file but can't find the post anymore, so I'll just copy it there:

"Percentages are based on retailer networks

So when I say "Wal-Mart" I mean:

1) All sales from the 4,311 Wal-Mart stores in the USA
2) All sales from walmart.com
3) All sales from the 621 Sam's Club stores in the USA
4) All sales from samsclub.com

NPD USA Retailer Marketshare, beginning of the 6th gen (approx. 2001):

1) Wal-Mart - 20%
2) Toys R Us - 14%
3) Best Buy - 11%
4) Babbage's / GameStop - 11%
5) Electronic Boutique - 10%
6) Target - 7%
----Top 6 comprise 73% of the USA market

NPD USA Retailer Marketshare, beginning of the 7th gen (approx. 2007):

1) GameStop - 25%
2) Wal-Mart - 24%
3) Best Buy - 14%
4) Target - 14%
5) Toys R Us - 4%
6) Circuit City - 3%
----Top 6 comprise 84% of the USA market

NPD USA Retailer Marketshare, beginning of the 8th gen (approx. 2013):

1) GameStop - 30%
2) Wal-Mart - 25%
3) Target - 15%
4) Best Buy - 12%
5) Amazon - 6%
6) Toys R Us - 1%
----Top 6 comprise 89% of the USA market"

Prediction: End of 2015 Hardware sales (as of January 20, 2015)

Wii U: 12.1M | XBO: 19.8M | PS4: 36.0M | 3DS: 58.5M | PSV: 11.7M

Easily enough for people to stop with the nonsense about how we can't use Amazon to help predict sales. It isn't like it was 6-7 years ago. A stupidly high amount of people do their shopping through Amazon now. Free 2-day shipping with Prime, great deals, etc...
