If you've never had a PS3 then go with it. CHeaper and with a great library of cheaper games. then upgrade to the PS4 whenever you're done with it. If that's a few years then a lot of the PS4 games will be cheap.

PS4. Now if only I could figure out how to launch a game other than FF 14... even the mighty Destiny has not had a chance with the PS4 yet. :)
Well, I took the plunge. It's going to be a PS4. More specifically, the bundle that includes Fifa and Minecraft, as these are the two games they want to play the most, and are unable to do so on the ancient laptop reserved for their use.
Although there is a huge list of games for the PS3, I never hear about any of these games when they go play their friends' PS3s, except for Battle Royale. The comparative lack of games for the PS4 isn't a problem, as the Wii U is getting some heavy usage, and having taken more time to compare PS4 and Wii U features, a PS4/Wii U combo will pretty much cover everything we want, gaming and entertainment-wise for some time to come.
Thanks to everyone who posted their thoughts and advice in this thread. Much appreciated!
It shows again that Sony really nailed it with that Fifa + Minecraft bundle even if it's anecdotal.
And a PS4 + Wii U combo is a really good choice indeed.
