Ghibli. I can't stand Disney films, characters feel too shallow and they waste time that could have been used for development on songs.

Well when you use those films as examples it's hard to disagree. When you include today's stuff I'd say Ghilbi

XBOX ONE/Wii U/3DS/PC

RIP Iwata 12/6/1959-7/11/2015

Thanks for all the great memories!

Ghibli hands down.

Disney doesnt make movies like it used to. Its all super hero stuff now. Studio Ghibli is better, but it got closed, so what can we do? They could have made a few comercial flicks to stay afloat. Ni no kuni, for example, would've made a great animated movie.

Also, their latest movie about warplanes was incredibly depressing. I dont think people want to go watch an animated movie to be depressed.

I don't really know how you can ignore Pixar as part of the modern Disney though.

Pixar and the Walt Disney Animation Studios are basically the same company but with seperated teams. They're both presided by the same people (Edwin Catmull and John Lasseter).

It's like Nintendo and their EAD divisons.

Definitely Disney.

Your Rotten Tomatoes score comparison is cute. You do realize critical acclaim cannot be measured in mere numbers, right? The top 10s also exclude The Lion King and Nausicaa. Overall, I'm not sure where you were going with that.

But anyway... while Disney is legendary, if you compared everything Disney has made since 1984 (the year Ghibli's first masterpiece, Nausicaa was released) to Ghibli, Ghibli triumphs.

I kind of get it because Ghibli is just the one studio. But if it's unfair to compare them to multiple studios, surely it must also be unfair to compare them to a studio that's been making movies for like 80 years.

I think Ghibli v Pixar is the more sensible comparison.

Hands down Disney is better.

Ghibli's films are really quite bland and Miyazaki is overrated. The studio has failed to produce any other talent on his level, so I fully expect that Ghibli is now finished.

If you look at the importance of disney in the history of animation there is absolutely no comparison. Disney pioneered every major technique in animation, and even in anime tezuka is a far more important figure than Miyazaki.

All of miyazakis characters look the same. It's laughable really. He hits you over the head with trite sacharine morality, his animation style is boring and subdued, the films are interminable, watching a ghibli film more than once is painful. Otomo, oshii, anno, and kawajiri have all done far better work, if not with as much broad family friendly audience appeal.
