Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Sunset overdrive releases in 6/7 days; Dismal pre orders

Insomniac are my most beloved developers. My first proper console I owned was a PS2 which my mum bought me, it came bundled with the first ratchet and clank. We couldnt really afford any more games at that time, so I kept playing ratchet and clank over and over again. I was never good at it (I was like 4..or 8 or something) but it was a blast, and when I was able to, I eventually bought and played every ratchet and clank game released on PS2 (including deadlocked ergh..) and eventually ps3.

I want insomniac to succeed with this game, even if it's on a console I have no real desire to own currently. But it seems there isn't no real desire for this game outside of the extremely core market (the group of gamers who love to play all games and especially new ip's)

With about 18ish days left on the latest vcgchartz until release day, the pre orders are dismal...

Not where a xbox one exclusive - microsoft published and pristine developer developed game wants to be. And a significant one, I have to account it to a few things

  • The market for a game like SO is not there on the xbox one, currently.
  • Insomniac, though one of the best developers, have had a average track record in the past 2 years or so with their recent games
(Fuse, All4One, FFA, Into the nexus(very short game)
  • Could there be such as thing as too much marketing. Weekly Sunset TV's revealing a ton of info has potentially killed any chance for hype, and leaves very little left to be desired?
Let's assume this game doesn't do well, it'll be a streak of mediocre to bad-selling games recently.
Fuse - approx 182k
R&C nexus - approx 540k
R&C FFA - 190k (But most prob would've been digital)
The game may be able to sell a million. But is a million enough for microsoft to call it a success and recover their costs, as well as pay insomniac their bonus/due dilligence.
Im sad.

I was told not to trust VGC preorders.

Wouldn't trust the pre-orders on this site tbh.

never ever trust VGChartz pre-orders

vgc pre-orders arent very reliable

No one believes that this will be a best seller. No one. And thats okay. Not every game, not every exclusive has to sell 5 million + units. At the same time, as much as we may disagree, we are not (for the most part) delusional.

Sunset Overdrive is gonna bomb harder than Forza Horizon

IMHO, 1 million by end of 2016-starting 2017

1.2 million lifetime.

Forza 2 opening week - 228k
Total Sales Lifetime - 4.02m

Forza 3 Opening week -  209k
Total Sales Lifetime - 5.42m

Forza 4 Opening Week -  515k
Forza 4 Lifetime - 4.25m

Forza 5 Opening Week - 314k
Forza 5 Lifetime so far - 1.53m

Forza Horizon Opening Week -  316k
Forza Horizon Lifetime - 1.76m

Forza Horizon 2 Opening Week - 370k (270k XBO)

I do find it amusing how unaware some people are about things.  Forza is a game with legs, not a front-loaded seller.

Anyways back to the OP, as others has mentioned, VGC pre-orders.  MCC alone should show how off they can be at times.

I think a lot of people are overestimating SO. I know VGC isn't the most reliable, and neither is Amazon hourly, but Sunset overdrive is 53 on the hourly charts right now and I don't think I've ever seen it in the top twenty. Compare that to even Bayo 2 (which most people think SO will easily outsell) and Bayo 2 has been in the top 10 on Amazon hourly for almost a week.

I think SO is one of the most interesting looking XBO games so I would love to be wrong, but I have very low expectations...
