Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is this Gen of Consoles just WEAK?

Earlier, a thread was started claiming that the PS4 was lame.  The basic thought seemed to be based on the idea that the PS4 was not revoltionay or even evolutionary.  Just a more powerful PS3.  That thread has been locked.  So, let's try to be civil here.

That led me to the following thoughts:

I would say that the WiiU has the gimmick controller. Other than that, it is way under powered. But, coming from the Wii, that was a significant upgrade in graphics and general horsepower.  The reality is, that hasn't stopped it from having good games. That is something lost on people nowadays.

The PS4 does seem like just a PS3.5. The thing is, if you buy the XB1 without Kinect, it too is basically the same as a suped up 360.

This is all about the fact that all of the new consoles are just too under powered to "impress" us with their capabilities. Sure, the games look a little better. But do they really seem "Next Gen"? Not really. Even with a lot of small new features, the biggest one is gameplay. In that regard, none of the new consoles have really shown that there is a big improvement YET.   When that happens, people will be more impressed.

So, do you think this current generation PS4/XB1/WiiU are WEAK or not fully taken advantage of yet?

It is near the end of the end....

I do call them fairly weak by comparison when going from ps2 to ps3 or xbox to 360 cause I dont think the leap is as high or as noticeable... Heck, even specs wize, at the time of release, ps3/360 were equivalent to a high end pc vs now... its like mid range to entry level (With the release of the 900 series)

Cause its like, (as an example) the ps3 had a gtx 7800 (roughly) and the xbox 360 had a 7800-7900 gtx (roughy) and the ps3 launched around 2006 and 360 launched around 2005 so back then, a 7800/7900 were considered "high end" gpu cards for PC vs now, you have basically an amd 7850/7870 for a ps4 which are considered mid ranged even compared to the amd 6000 series

But, hopefully, this will lead game developers to think more about artistic direction more than just pushing polygons and the first party will always make good use of the hardware so oh well

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

I think that all 3 are powerful enough

I think they are relatively weak(in comparison to last gens jump) and they will have their potential tapped much quicker due to the architecture being similar to PC. For myself you could tell me most PS4/X1 games are PS3/X360 and I would believe you. My major hope for this gen was better AI and framerate, but as usual it seems most game are going for visuals.

Last gens machines were closer to high end PC specs, this gen is closer to mid end. Everyone went cheap so that there were small to no losses incurred(Nintendo has done this before) on their consoles. I suspect this gen to be the shortest for all console manufacturers with Wii3/X2/PS5 coming out no later than 2019.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

When you put it like that, it does seem like the Wii U is the best choice to play, and the Xbox with Kinect in second place.

Something innovative don't necessarily mean better then something evolutionary i will always prefer playing with an traditional gamepads over an innovative one like Wii mote and Wii U controller

PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m

Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m

The hardware isn't weak at all. Its just the same problem that everyone always picks up on every time a new generation starts. The games just dont look that much better whilst generations are crossing paths. Take last gen for example, people are saying that was a "big" difference but it most certainly didn't look like it at the start.

Take 360 for example. Go an look back at games like Call Of Duty 2, GUN, Perfect Dark Zero, King Kong, Oblivion, Far Cry Instincts....the list goes on. All of these games look absolutely horrid when compared to what came out on the system a year later. And the games that came out a year or two after that made them games look rubbish and so on and so forth.

A new generation always starts with cross gen ports, or games that look slightly better due to devs working out how to program and get the most out of the system. Its the same every single generation. Don't judge whether a console is underpowered now, ask the question again in say late 2015, early 2016 when games are released solely for this generation and with longer development times.

I don't think they are weak, and whilst its an interesting debate, you have to remember that 99.9% of people who go out and buy xbox ones and PS4s, dont care less. Do they look better than anything on the previous gen? Yes, then that keeps players happy.
