Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is Destiny the most over-hyped game of all time?

I'm soliciting opinions opinions on this but I'm also going to present my own analysis for why Destiny is the most over-hyped game to date.

To qualify, I've taken into consideration two critical factors:

1. Metacritic

2. Budget

Using ONLY the above two I can only find two contenders. Star Wars MMO (SWTOR) and Destiny.

SWTOR had a rumored 200 million dollar budget and currently sits at 85 on metacritic. In contrast, Destiny had an estimated 500 million dollar budget and is currently sitting at 76/77 metacritic for PS4 and XB1 respectively.  I can draw no other conclusion than Destiny is the undisputed most overhyped game to date. It's budget is double that of SWTOR and scored almost 10 points lower on average.

I'm not saying 76 is a bad score but is it honestly what people expected? I think most people assumed a high 80's to 90's given Bungie's pedigree. But if we factor in commercial success SWTOR is clearly the loser. It went F2P less than a year before launch and was arguably not the WoW-killer as many predicted. Destiny is to date a commercial success and we don't know if it has staying power with all the negative press.

Another possible contender is Duke Nukem Forever which took 10 years to develop and received overall poor scores on metacritic (ranging presently from 49-54). Though it still didn't have the monster budget of the aforementioned games.

What do you think? What can top Destiny in this "award" category?

What define overhyped for me is the success of the game across the gamers.

It is really not overhyped... sold a ton and it is yet selling at fast pace... more and more gamers are talking about it and starting to play.

The game is amazing and holds strong to be one of the best seller games this holidays.

Consensus among gamers and reviewers seem to be in favor of my hypothesis. To most, destiny is at least a slight disappointment. And that's being pretty generous

Certainly the most overhyped game in recent memory.

Nope.

Still think overall TF was more overhyped, but Destiny was overhyped more closer to its release more than TF.

No it didn't. For the love of God, will people stop spreading misinformation?

The developers clarified that that estimate was for the franchise, not the first game. We've no idea how much Destiny cost.

As for your question, any question that end with "of all time?" is a wrong in my book.

As I have played 68 hours I have obviously enjoyed it. My favourite part is the competition with my close buddies to remain at similar levels (now all are 28 or 29). I feel addicted to getting the best gear, and being able to hold my own in the Raid.

However Destiny was supposed to change gaming forever, and I don't think that it has or will. That said I think it is a success commercially and it is averaging high player numbers. But strictly relative to the IMMENSE hype it is a disappointment. So yes I can conclude that relatively speaking it is the most overhyped game of all time, with Watch_Dogs, Too Human, and a few others making the list.

this gen? yes

So if Destiny was only "hyped" (not the aforementioned overhyped), it would be ok?
