Forums - Sony Discussion - SONY exclusive marketing/content question

I can set the benefits of Sony getting into deals with publishers to get earlier Beta access/extra content/exclusive marketing etc at this stage with the race being close(ish) with Microsoft but I was wondering....if the lead were to grow to something like 15-20million would Sony still be interested in investing their money in providing this to us players when the generation will be in the bag.  Being dominant will mean all publishers will by default be on on the platform unless Microsoft buy them out or throw tonnes of cash their way to make it exclusive.

What I am getting at is, do you think that we as sony customers will get fewer Sony funded perks as they become dominant or do you think it will continue.

It is not only a Sony decision at all...

Publishers wants they game marketed or with exclusive deals on the leader Plataform... so they will force Sony to help them with that.

Sony will need to make the deal even if they don't want because the relationship with the publisher... it is a mutual help.

I don't think third party ask for those deals. Thats more of a console manufacturer thing. They just want as many applicable audiences as they can reach and if the console manufacturers feel the need like MS did to start a content war then so be it. Sony is now in it with them.

Third-party ask for help with marketing/dev costs... Sony / MS give them at the cost of exclusive things.

It is how it works... and not other way.

EA asked MS to help with Titanfall... same with Activision and Sony for Destiny... to be fair they ask for both and them decide which have the better plan (EA reached Sony for Titanfall too).

exclusive marketing isnt about boosting sales when one game comes it. yeah, that helps, but its mostly about mind share. having the PS or xbox logo come out half the games out there builds mind share within the consumer. its a form of marketing their brand. look at a batman trailer, there is a PS4 logo, at a destiny trailer, ps4 logo, gta trailer, PS4 logo. probably the best way to market a console is through these exclusive marketing deals.

also, your logic doesnt make sense, why would sony want to slow down its sales by stop having these exclusive marketing deals that push their sales, just because they are in the lead? if they are in the lead, they should take advantage of that.

Did MS stop doing it last generation?

It will get easier to convince pubs when you have millions of more consoles to sell their games on than the other company that could get the marketing deal.

They won't stop for two reasons:

1. It works for both the publisher and the console manufacturer

2. The competition is going to continue to try to get those exclusive deals as well.

The thing is though, Sony and MSFT both want to boost sales at the expense of the other competitor and now they are doing that through all the deals as the generation is young and its not such a big gap. When (if) Sony is dominant and the default console maker of choice for people looking at buying, what real incentive is there for Sony to spend all this money when they are still getting all the growth?

My personal view is that when Sony gets to around 75-80% market share (up from current 66ish%) we will start seeing less console exclusive advertising/marketing/deals from Sony. The large market share will feed into the gaming websites and they will do all the advertising/marketing they need.....it'll snowball.
