I'm a Catholic, and proud to be associated with the church, but personally I don't go for the whole repent, hell and damnation thing, or feeling obliged to attend church, pray etc. and taking everything written in the bible literally.
I believe there are a lot of great stories in the bible, that teach some good life lessons (just as there are bad, eg: I don't care for the story of Abraham and Isaac) and that Jesus was a good man with a good message, and a lot of what he had to say I try to apply to my own life, eg: staying humble, loving your enemy etc.
But I also believe in evolution, and that if there is a God it is possible for him to fit in with that theory, as a catalyst.
I think God would be satisfied that I try to be a good person, empower myself and do the right thing etc. without relying too heavily on Religion for support, as I believe some people do. I think if he was up there, he would be proud to see people enjoying life, being good to others etc. with or without the guidance of the church. I think religion is there for those that need it, but for those strong enough to stand without it more power to them! However I don't believe it's fair to paint all religions and it's followers with the same brush, and criticise the belief system as many do.
Personally it's comforting to think there is someone watching over all of us, and though sometimes I've questioned whether there is a God, I don't think I could ever deny the existence.
Having said that I have had moments where I've felt that love for Jesus, and moments of prayer that have been very powerful- perhaps because it's not often that I do pray, that when I feel it's necessary it is a release- whether there is a God to listen or not- I have felt a connection.
Anyway that's my take- a lot of people seem to be firmly for or against religion, so I figured it was worth sharing
