Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo Will Lock Your Wii U If You Don't Agree To The New License Agreement

If this is true, it is the first time I've heard of this being done. Why would Nintendo lock your Wii U? I thought they could only block online play if you didn't agree to the new terms.

  1. Software License.
  2. You may use the software, content, and data that came with your Wii U or that is compatible with and authorized for use on your Wii U, including any updates or replacement to that software, content, or data that we or our authorized providers make available to you (collectively, the "Software") subject to the terms of this Section. The Software is licensed, not sold, to you solely for your personal, noncommercial use on your Wii U. You may not publish, copy, modify, reverse engineer, lease, rent, decompile, or disassemble any portion of the Software, or bypass, modify, defeat, tamper with, or circumvent any of the functions or protections of your Wii U, unless otherwise permitted by law. The Wii U console and accessories, the Software, and any services available using the Wii U (collectively, the "Wii U System"), are constantly evolving, and we may update or change your Wii U System, in whole or in part, without notice to you. Such updates or changes may be required for you to play new Wii U games, enjoy new features, or continue to access Wii U services. After your Wii U System is updated or changed, any existing or future unauthorized modification of the hardware or software of your Wii U System, or the use of an unauthorized device in connection with your Wii U System, will render the system permanently unplayable. Content obtained through the unauthorized modification of the hardware or software of your Wii U System will be removed. You agree not to use your Wii U System in an unlawful manner or to access the systems, devices, accounts, or data of others (including Nintendo) without their (or our) consent.

Could this be bacause of the hackers modding MK8?

Is this Nintendo's way of preventing hacks?

I usually don't even bother reading these and blindly click on agree just so I could continue playing my games. But a company making your console a brick for not agreeing to the terms is unheard of.

Well... Piracy is bad... And if you pirate (and get caught), then you have to face the consequence... And to be honest, I am sure there will be hacks out there to prevent locks such as this and also to unlock a locked system so its mostly eh. And if you don't pirate/hack it, then you have nothing to worry about... Heck, unless you are a complete noob, one of the first rules of piracy is don't connect the console to the internet if you are pirating and I am guessing thats the only way they will be able to lock it

And its not really that unheard of.. If you go against Valve's terms and services, they will ban your account and delete all your games! (Same with Sony and MS) Although, I guess locking your whole system is going a bit far

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

I guess you should agree to the agreement

That's not entirely what it says though.

Your system gets only locked if they catch you being a pirate or hacking and modding your system after this update is done. You could decline just fine, but then your system won't get updated, at the price of you being unable to play games or use features that need your system to be updated. Long story short, if you mistakenly press 'decline', you're not suddenly stuck with a dead brick.

Whaaaaaat!?!

They will delete your games as well???

Damn, I guess it's not so unheard of.

You sure MS & Sony will delete your games? If so, I never knew. Or are you talking about the free games?

But the article is saying that is exactly what is happening.

Yes, Sony and MS will delete your games as well even if you paid for them! Trust me, I know cause I goofed on hacking my ps3 (which is veryyyyy hard to hack) and I got my account (along with my games) all banned! Now, I did download them before I got banned and I don't really buy that many games from psn but yes, the few games that I bought from Psn I can no longer access from the store!

I've never disagreed with one and don't know of anyone other than hackers that would disagree.

I do think it's wrong for them to make the console a brick though.
