1. I bought it because Wii, in spite of many games having tacked on motion controls that just weren't great, also had a LOT more games I actually wanted and was interested in, between retail and WiiWare, than the previous two Nintendo consoles combined. I liked N64 and GC, but during the GC gen I just kind of fell out of gaming a bit. I still played at friends houses, checking out new games I was interested and whatnot, but I didn't buy a GC myself. Almost did for TP, which I had been waiting forever for, but then I realized I could play it on Wii just as easily, with the GC controller and all, so I say f**k it, and just bought a Wii instead. In fact, I bought up quite a few GC games I liked, or wanted to check out, once I got my Wii.
2. I got the Wii U because I liked the controller idea, once I got over the initial shock of it, MAINLY because I liked the off-tv play idea, and I REALLY liked the idea of most games NOT having tacked on, forced motion controls. I liked that they didn't keep the Wii-mote as the main controller, even though I ALSO liked that it would still be a compatible option. I liked the Wii-mote for some things, such as IR aiming and playing it NES style, but at the end of the day, the GamePad is a FAR superior controller in every possible sense.
3. I got a Wii U because I REALLY wanted Pikmin 3, and didn't think I'd have to wait almost a year after launch to get it. Unfortunately, not only was that wait disappointing, but then after literally years of waiting for a sequel to one of my favorite franchises, Pikmin 3 wound up itself being a major disappointment to me for three reasons: NO camera zooming, which was/is integral to Pikmin gameplay; Only ONE save file, which in this day and age is unreasonable and absurd for ANY game to have, period; NO c-stick "swarming" action, which even more-so than camera zoom, was SUPER integral to gameplay in Pikmin 1 and 2, it was something I constantly did, and it helped you SO much in avoiding hazards and enemies, and especially in boss fights. Without the "swarming" control of the Pikmin, the gameplay in P3 is cumbersome and often very annoying, because you find yourself losing Pikmin because you CAN'T c-stick-style move them out of harms way at a whim. Some people (mainly those who had never bothered with the first two games in the first place and thus didn't know any better) tried to claim that the gameplay is fine without that feature, but I'm sorry, no it's not. Pikmin 3 is still a good game all around: I could get over not playing Olimar, I could get over the lameness of NOT collecting ANY treasures, but instead just fruits, and I could even learn to get over the absolutely short-sighted and nonsensical one save file and NO camera zoom issues........Pikmin 3 would have been 100% better as a game, and would have even been almost GREAT, had it had c-stick style "swarming". And that's that. So the game I wanted a Wii U most for, was a major letdown to me, which sucks.
4. Having said that, there are many other games that I have wound up liking, or am really looking forward to, especially on eShop. eShop and the flood of indie gaming to Wii U has been a godsend, not only to give the system more games, but also because I grew up with 2D gaming (NES, SNES, arcades, etc.), and a lot of these new indie titles are "retro-inspired", in classic stylings, and I love it. Beyond that, I also have high hopes (that I REALLY hope don't let me down) for Zelda U, because it has the potential to be a massive, epic, and amazing experience, and I really really really really hope Nintendo doesn't somehow find a way to f*ck it up (forced gimmicks, straying too far from the Zelda foundations, etc.). I also am naive enough to hope that this new "Star Fox" they've vaguely announced might ALSO be the true SF64 sequel I've been waiting over a decade for, even though from those silly "Demo" game concepts, and Miyamoto's vague mention of what sounds like a REALLY horrible GamePad use/game mechanic as a possibility.....I'm also very afraid it's going to wind up garbage and I will still be waiting for a GOOD SF game.
But all in all, I enjoy the system, there are a LOT of indie games I'm waiting to release because they look awesome and I want to play them, I like that it has GBA VC releases and hope they come out with the games I want most, I am really looking forward to games like Smash Bros, Yarn Yoshi, Zelda, etc., and am hopeful Nintendo will continue coming out with high quality releases (such as whatever Retro is working on hopefully being amazing). I think it's a good system, and personally want it to last on the market till at LEAST no earlier than fall/holiday 2016, so that I can feel like I've gotten my money's worth, and get plenty of retail AND indie games during that span. I'm not in any hurry to have to go out and spend another $300-$400 on a new system and all new games, so I personally want Wii U to last as long as it possibly can.
